There is a post I started below titled 215 inj`s and #6 plate.

Question, is there a difference in pistons in the 12V eng`s?

Is this true? If so what is the difference?ThanksOo. Oo. Oo.

Ted would know but....

Go check out Dave Fritz's web page. You can get to that link from the TDR link page under member pages. I think this topic does not get touched on enough, but ho-hum, any how look at his page :D tons of good info you might like.

The 97 Dodge Service Manual show two listings for pistons one for 180 hp auto and one for 215 manual. But it does not say what the difference is.

there ARE two pistons. and three grades of each, making a total of six available between the 180 and 215hp twelve V's.

I'm not sure of the differences though. it could only be something like the bowl shapping or ring placement in relation to the top. the compression stays the same and the ring depths are the same. as well as the pin height and diameter. (with exception of the grades)

more than likely it's just a different shape bowl on the top of the two. to accommodate the fuel amounts.

The piston grading refers to the piston height. The way to figure out the grade of piston is to measure the height of the piston from the top of the deck with a dial indicator.

Piston grade is not like egg or milk grading. Piston grade has nothing to do with quality.

This grading is done to insure perfect compression in all cylinders.

Further, there are differing piston designs for differing engines.

Turbocharged engines get tapered rings and differing heights of rings in them and normal aspirated engines get straight cut rings without taper.

You can bet your tail end that bowl design had alot to do with emissions and clean burning.
