The dataplates on the cam cover are glued on - does that mean the KDP might be done?

I bought this truck in July.

Decided to get the parts and do the KDP fix. When I was looking everything over I noticed the dataplates on the cam cover or case are glued on. I'm talking about the dataplates by the injection pump that have the engine serial number on them.

Why would they be glued on? Shouldn't they be rivited on? If they should be rivited on - Why else would the cam case of been replaced??

I went to the useless dealer and asked to have all waranty work printed out for me on this truck. It had a lot of brake work done to it and one instance that they didn't know what happened. They said they couldn't find out. HMMM - was this when the truck was repainted (if the dealer did it) or was this a KDP issue, or what - guess I'll never know.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Sounds like you have the same helpful dealer I had. Wife's Durango lost oil pressure and they said they could not get truck to do it and nothing was wrong, well three visits of this and I told her drive it. She made it home one night with three rods knocking on the block, got so hot it even fried the trans, guess that they were wrong!! Had to pactically throw the service manager against a wall for them to honor the warranty.

As far as your plate goes could be somebody did some undocumented work. Have you tried Carfax, they can give you a report of all documented work done for about $12 I think.

Is the aluminum gear case painted Titanium Black and does it look like it was painted after assembly? If not, probably was replaced.

No, the gearcase isn't painted - it is the natural aluminum color.

I did do the carfax thing when I bought the truck - that didn't show anything wrong with the truck. I can't say I've found anything "wrong" with the truck. It is fun to drive, and has run great.

I'm just wondering if the cam gear case was replaced - was it because the dowel pin came out or what?

Why else would the case be replaced?? That is a lot of work to replace the case!

Oh yea - this dealer I'm talking about is the same dealer whos wonderful mechanic "forgot" to hook the intercooler hose back to the intake manifold after he did the throttle cable warranty recall. I KNEW I should have done it myself. Needless to say - they ain't even BREATHING on my truck again!

The engine was painted after complete assembly, so your gear case has been replaced. Almost certainly the dowel pin problem. I just hope the dealer used the new case that has a restriction in the hole to retain the pin, and they loctited the bolts inside so they can't fall out either.

I've often wondered the same thing. I bought my truck used as well. I noticed that there is some type of sillycone sealant between the case and the tin cover. I would not be suprised at all to find something had been done to the KDP in my truck as well. Still plan on getting into it just for the peace of mind.
