Alright, just how driveable is a modified HX40? I drive about 40k per year and tow some. I also want more power and need some heat relief before I add more fuel. I would be willing to make some adjustments to my driving habits (heck, I already do) if needed, but I can't have a truck that isn't 110% reliable.

Those with HX40's:

What other fueling mods?

What kind of EGT's when cruising? Towing?

Do you tow? How heavy?

What's the downside?

I know, I know. If I'm concerned about reliability and stuff drive a stock truck... Yeah right!

Downside? I can't think of any ! I've towed 14k, and regularly tow a 8k camper. The PDR 40 is an awesome turbo for towing, and is great as a daily driver. Perfect turbo to go along with any fueling box and level 3 injectors. Lag is barely, barely detectable over a stock hx35 turbo.

I do have enough fuel that I don't tow anything at over level 5 on my Powermax3. I have a VanAaken also, it keeps the EGT's down when towing. You'll find the timing benefiits from a VA or EZ Edge work really well in towing applications, in combination with a fueling box.

DDII's and DD Ultimate fueling module, custom

What kind of EGT's when cruising? Towing?

I see EGT's of 600 to 800 while cruising. 800- 1250* while towing.

Do you tow? How heavy?

I have hauled up to 26,600 lbs behind my truck and I was pushing upwards of 36 psi on the turbo at 65 mph. I wouldn't recommend this to many but I live where I can be real careful. Not much traffic.

What's the downside?

Hmmmmmm? Piers is working on a HX 50/55? No thats not it. No downsides. All around it is much better for towing and racing and cruising down the hiway. Some think it is a little loud but not me..... I have over 20,000 miles on mine and it is fine.

I get about 685EGT, cruising at 2000rpm, 2-4lbs boost, 70mph.

I do no towing.

I do not think that the HX35 would handle the BD step 5's.

There is only an up side no down.

By the way the HX40 is great for everyday driving. I don't see a real difference between the spool up of the 40 over the 35, but I also went from DDII's to BD V's at the same time.

OverFueled:)

You guys sound like an informercial for PDR. :D :D :D

Looks like I better get one. I see some of you are running II's with the 40. Is that enough fuel to get it spooled? I was thinking I'd have to move up to III's to spool a 40 ok.

JKloppe is running a pdr-40 with a completely stock truck! He had to deal with his cracked 53 block so out came all of the goodies. He put just his EZ back on,and it will spool the turbo to about 26lbs. It's not fast but my point is it is drivable at 5000 ft. His EGTs can't even touch 950. lol

FYI- his runs a DTT 91%.

JLinder:

My son has a 2001 with the following "modifications":

TST PM 3

DD TTPM "stacked" on TST PM 3

DD "Super Mental" Injectors

Piers HX-40/16

Scotty II Air System

4" exhaust

EGT's cruising: 600-800

EGT's towing: 900-1100 degress (depends on temp, humidity,

grade of hills, etc. )

FYI, we tow an 18' enclosed cargo racing trailer all over the

Mid-Atlantic and eastern part of the U. S. Alot of our towing

is done up I-77 through N. C. , Va. , W. Va. Loaded, the trailer

is close to 10,000 lbs.

I agree with what all the other members have already said!

The Piers HX-40/16 is one of THE BEST "all around" turbos

for these trucks! Downside???? I really don't see any either!

Piers seems to have found the answer to the earlier problems

associated with the "stock" HX-40's which plagued alot of

the members here.

I also have one on my 12 valve 96' which works equally

as well.

I don't think you can go wrong by buying and installing

one of Piers' HX-40's on your Dodge CTD!

Good luck!

You can see what I have in my sig and in truck profile.

My HX40 is bone stock, not modified in any way, 16^2 cm exhaust housing. Lag sucks big time when you hammer the go pedal. I rarely tow, only have towed ~5K pound trailer. When I have towed, EGTs run 900 - 1000* at 70 MPH (2000 RPM in 6th gear, 3. 54 gears) on flat ground, I can easily pass 1200*F going up hills towing, I keep my Comp on 2x3 at all times except when drag racing. These temps are about 200*F higher than when I run empty.

I can't say from personal experience how much difference a modified HX40 would make compared to mine. I have had mine for about 20 months, 40K miles now.

I noticed a little bit more lag than my stock turbo. Egt's a little lower and slower to 1300. Haven't seen over 37 boost but I haven't really tried as I am upgrading my transmission. Freakin Awesome turbo sound with my Mega Cannon. Makes other diesels look at the new big dog. :D

I went from my Stock turbo w/ a 16 CM2 housing on it to the Piers Super HX-40 and lost no drivablity at all. I fact before adding more fuel the PDR HX-40 cleaned up my smoke almost completely. I was at 392 HP with the stiock turbo and was making 45-46 PSI peek boost at full throttle and had major smoke with the Piers HX-40 at only 38 PSI all the smoke was gone and I had way more mid range and top end. EGTs dropped 150-200 deg at full throttle.

I have added alot more fuel now going from a #11 plate to a #0 and can now tow my TT 5 MPH faster than before and keep the EGTs under 1250. Power hasn't been a problem towing at all for some time EGTs have been. The Piers HX-40 Turbo is the cats meow for towing. :D  :D

Steve, You know better. The HX-40 fill my need for HP but now I NEEEEEED More Power.....

LIke you don't alreay know Your as addited as I am.
