Hey all,

Well, I finally converted my roommate (over from the Furd darkside) and last night he bought a used '03 CTD w/ 28k miles on it. He drove it for two days and loved every minute of it, so he decided he had to have it. Now to my question:

How does he tell whether he has a HO with 48RE or the standard 250 HP with the 47RE? I'm 1500 miles away, and haven't a clue on what the differences are on the '03's... I'm a 2nd gen guy and just don't know what to tell him. NO, the dealer he bought from was no help... it WAS a Chrysler dealer, but they didn't sell Dodge and had no clue about this truck... even told him it had a fully independent, wishbone front suspension   Anyway, I have the VIN # if that will help. I'd just like to know.

He got what I believe is a fair deal, and a good warranty upgrade too (100,000 bumper to bumper). He's happy as can be with his new purchase, and next year I'm sure the neighbors will get tired of the Cummins guys rolling into the apartments.

Thanks all,

Josh

Any D. C. dealer can run vin. number and print him off the build sheet in about 5 minutes. Gives same list as window sticker without prices. service depts run one on every vehicle that comes in for work.

Snow, check the 8th digit of the VIN. If it is the letter C. Then it is an HO, if it is the number 6, it is the standard output. Now to find out what transmission it has, it is a little more involved. Remove the passenger side headlight. Behind it you will find a body ID plate that s engraved. The middle line is what you are interested in, there are seven lines in total. The 4th line (middle) is the one that contains the info you want. Ignore the 1st 12 numbers, that is the vehicle order number. number 13 to 15 tells what transmission it has. If it says DGP, it if the 47 RE, if it says DG8, it id the 48 RE. Hope this helps. . it is out of the service manual.

You can also use the build date on the door. If before 01/01/03 it can only have an SO/47RE. Check the data plate on the eng (drivers side) for the listed HP, also. Not as exacting as the build plate but it will ball park one real quick on the dealers lot. (specially when the salesperson is SOOO KNOWLEDGABLE  )

SOTSU!

????

Why doesnt he just pop the hood and look at the Data plate on the left side of the engine just below the valve cover?? ;)

Good point Fiver, I missed that. Guess I shouldn't reply to a post so late at night, my brain dosen't fire on all cylinders:)

If you go up a good grade in overdrive and loose 10 mph with your foot to the floor then you got an SO 47re like mine. If you like your truck to feel like a gasser , you'll be pleased.
