hey guys... my 03 CTD seems to go above the middle mark on the temp guage when cruizing in traffic and climbing hills... I am concerend cuz it is still winter and less than 80 degrees out and it climbs!... anyone know if this temp guage is accurate (unlike the oil pressure gauge) and what is the highest reading you all have experienced so far??... i pull a 14k fiver... just curious

I haven't towed anything over 2K yet since I just bought mine 10 days ago but it seems to stay just under the 200 mark or about half way. If it is a true gauge I would think somewhere in the 190 to 200 range would be normal anytime of the year.

Mine does get close to 200 in traffic with no load. I haven't had problems when towing but then, most of the time, it's under 35 degrees.

I'm concerned about the temperature when I'll be pulling this summer and it's 90 degrees outside.

I haven't towed anything yet but mine stays just to the left of the middle mark in traffic and when flying down the highway.

You also have to remeber we have a "Visitronic" fan now with an electric clutch. Most of the time that fan is coasting kind of like the Horton fan system did, but this new fan is thermo-coupled as well (I think).

If it works right (!) when it gets hot, that clutch will lock up and temps will stay where they are, in the middle of the gauge.

We'll see this summer.

I had the scan tool hooked up and checked my gauge a few weeks ago. It was right on the money. It started to move at 140, hit the next line at 155, and sits just below the 200 line and stays steady at 192.

Going from memory, but I'm not more than a few degrees off.

I ran on the interstate today for 240 miles about 130 of that at 80 mph in temperatures ranging from 28 to 50 F. The temp stayed touching the 200 mark while at 80. Outside temperature definitely affects the engine temperature as does speed. The truck seems to be running warmer than it used to overall, though. I wonder if the fan is actually working anymore since they "fixed" it at the recall.

Hi Sag2, where did you buy the scan tool? Is it just a regular off-the-shelf code reader or bought from Cummins? Just what I need... more tools!
