Help! I have an 06 stock cummins and two days ago started having trouble. I live in Albuquerque, NM and was driving up the road when the turbo started to sound different. It had a throaty, or airy sound. When the turbo started making the new sound, the temp guage jumped from just below 200 to almost 245 on the stock temp guage. Also, it seems there is a little loss of power too. Only seems to do this under a load going up hill, and has only done this twice so far.

What is the cause?

Maybe check ALL of the hoses and clamps from the filter box to the turbo, from the turbo to the intercooler and from the intercooler to the intake manifold. Look for cracks as well as loose connections or clamps.
Sounds as if something is leaking or loose... you would lose boost pressure which would result in higher EGT and loss of power.

I had something like this happen on my old '95 while travelling. It turned out that the rubber boot from the air inlet came off at the turbo, therefore the turbo was not getting enough air in. Temps went very very quickly. I was able to find the problem, put it back on, tightened the clamp, and went on my merry way pulling my RV.

One of my more lucky fixes!

I have checked the hoses and clamps. The clamps are tight and the hoses look good. I can't tell if there is any more smoke when this happens because it has only been during the daytime so far.

May have to pressure test the inner cooler for leaks. Do you hear any whistling sounds?

BTW, we have a bit invested in your Alma Mata.
