Temp sensor in a tcase? How to do it?

Quadzilla Recon 4 n 1 gauges how good?

S400 for twins?

I want to install a temperature sensor in my NV271 tcase. My truck is a '93 Hummer with a 2003 Cummins/48Re/NV271 drivetrain and I offroad it quite a bit.

I was thinking of using the drain plug and I have a B&M drain plug but was unsure as to having it tapped or welded, since I think (not sure) that the drain plug has a hex head and is potmetal. Anybody done this? Is there a better way.

Thanks,

John

You could put a fast cooler on the PTO cover and use the NPT tap for sensor. I have one but have not installed it yet...

I have never seen a transfer case (especially an aluminum one) overheat. And I've done my fair share of off-roading.

Is the drain plug NPT thread? If so, just get some a reducer to thread into the drain plug hole, then screw your temp sender into that.

andres, you said you have a spare 271 t-case? where are you getting them? i want a 271 for my truck but its like pulling teeth to find one used

Hummers come with a 242AMG case with a cooling loop. They can get hot 200+ (hence the cooling loop). I think it's just good to know what temp it's running at. If I find it stays below 175 - great, but I have no idea and run in high and low gears in sand dunes. Gauge setup only costs $100, a pittance considering what's in the truck.

I've got a spare tcase in the garage, I'll look at it again for a port other than the drain.

The reason may be that that case was originally designed for a little Jeep Cherrokee with a 6 cylinder gas engine.

I run both my Cummins in the dunes and have never had any issues with the transfer case although I have broken 3rd gear in the 5spd.

Yup full size pick-ups definetly have their limitations off road, that's why I love em in the sand. I have a locked up Jeep for the trails,h1's are too wide for a lot of places I go to not to mention the price difference :{ . My brother drives an H1 and an 04. 5 ctd best of both worlds.

PPE built a military H1 that does 12 sec 1/4's... ... ..... still original paint.
