The temperature reading in my overhead console always indicates about 4 or 5 degrees higher than actual temperature. Where is the sensor located? I realize that the thermometer has a delayed readout and that engine compartment temperature can affect the reading but mine seems to have a permanent error. Are all of them inaccurate? Can they be adjusted? Is there a recommended cure? Should I plan on a trip to my dealer for a warranty replacement?

Any advice or information will be appreciated.

HBarlow,

The sensor on my '99 is located right next to the upper latch mechanism in the middle of the grille. Mine is usually right on. It looks like a simple piece of black plastic about the size of your thumb with a wire coming out of the bottom. Should be easy to locate.

My wife's '01 Durango had a misplaced piece of moulding that caused the engine compartment heat to go directly to the sensor. It showed about 20 degrees high! I put the piece of moulding where it belonged and now it's right on too.

We took the Durango to the dealer at first and they couldn't even find the sensor!!! I had to look over the shoulder of the parts man because I knew what it looked like on my Ram... that's how I found out that it had been tucked behind a piece of rubber moulding around the radiator shroud. Don't know what else to tell you... good luck.

My 97 was the same way when I first got it. Couldn't get any dealers to look at it. One did replace the overhead console but it still read the same. I bought a new probe, but still didn't help. I found the sensor mounted low next to the left front bumper support. I decided to try & relocate it. I simply moved it up about a foot to a new location about even with the top of the bumper, under the left headlight. I actually went as high as I could by pulling up all of the slack in the wiring. So far, it's been deadly accurate ever since. I think it was picking up "prop wash" from the cooling fan, & heat from the street on a hot day.

Inaccurate Thermometer

Thanks to each who replied.

I'll try to locate my sensor now that I know what to look for and where it should be. If the sensor does not appear to be fouled by a misplaced molding or in an obviously bad location where it picks up engine heat I guess I'll take the truck to my dealer and ask for a replacement while still under warranty.
