I saw a story on Nashville TV this morning that the state of Tennessee is proposing to enact a law banning the use of Jakes due to noise pollution. They are debating whether to ban use in just in certain areas, or to ban throughout the entire state. Is anyone aware of other states banning Jakes? If they enact the law, I wonder how many cars will have to get run over by fully-loaded runaway Kenworths before they reconsider their actions... ...

I dunno about any states banning them fully, But when I go up North in the winter, I do see signs entering towns telling you not to use them, and trucks pulled over for doing so... Straight pipe Jake

A little discretion on the truck drivers side would help a lot! There's no need for Jakes hammerin' through dual 6 straight stacks at 35 mph in town.

I have seen these signs and think we are not required to obey them. The signs I have seen in the western U. S. say no engine brakes. We have exhaust brakes, big difference in sound in my opinion. A difference I would be willing to go to court over.

I've enountered signs prohibiting " engine" brakes here in Ohio and elsewhere. Usually local ordinances posted out on the highway, at the urging of city folk who bought their country palace cheap and discovered later there was a highway nearby. Brought about by the rattle of engine brakes on otherwise poorly muffled road tractors.

Never seen a sign that mentions "exhaust brakes" and can't imagine the stately and majestic growl and whistle of such an arrangment at the back of our CTDs would even attract the atention of the constabulary.

Strikes me, too, that given the topography of Tennessee, that Jakes (exhaust OR engine) likely save more lives on their highways every year than child seats. But who said legislatures were reasonable?

Cynical? Moi?

Just from what I have learned. Jakes should be used only to maintain your speed going down a grade.

Around here the sighs say " No Unmuffled Jakes or engine brakes". Wich makes some sense

I think outlawing those jake brakes would be a huge mistake. Its pretty easy to burn up your brake with 80,000 pounds going down a grade. As far as I'm concerned the jakes are a huge safety device on the truck. Its a back up for if you ever did lose your brakes. They also prevent brakes from burnig up. If the trucking companys can't pursuade tenn's government. To keep the jakes. You may see some rise in truck crashes? Of course it will be the trucking companies fault too.

In are air brakes class. The instructors says there are people in the federal government, that wan't a fully loaded truck to have the same stopping distance as a passenger car. It sounds impossible but they wan't it. Its the cost right now that prevents it. Thats why I can't believe that the Feds would allow jake brake bans? But it sounds like in some states they already have in certain areas.

I don't pay any attention to these signs, but then i don't over do it either. I could see someone getting annoyed at a big rig flying into town at 2am with the jake on and 8" straights. I've heard of a few towns taking them down after a court challenge. After all it IS a factory installed item, and if they weren't legal they shouldn't install them RIGHT??It kind of reminds me of all of the smoking bans all over the country. If they're so bad get rid of them, but we all know they won't do that . By the way no one seems to care about a pack of 10 HARLEYS screaming through town at bar-time.

thats about retarted..... :-{} i can see in little towns here and there, but the entire state??? im sure that bill wont pass. . but if it does they better hire more TN state boys :-laf

I have found this in a lot of towns around MD that have noise ordinances. They do not want you to use a jake within city limits. They rarely enforce it unless the person is being obnoxious with it. Typical use is usually overlooked

Years ago, trucks used to go down the mountain from Monteagle, Tenn headed south and in many cases have their brakes on fire at the bottom. Many would lose brakes on that south bound run down the hill and wreck. Engine brakes should be a requirement for running in Tennessee. They sure as heck shouldn't be banned.

Tennessee

Tennessee would be pretty stupid banning engine brakes in the state that has I 24 at Monteagle and I 40 at Crossville - - - However that said Tennessee is not known for its legislature brain trust - - - if it's gonna' be stupid Tennessee will blaze the trail.

Most of the Signs prohibiting Jakes in WI run something like this:

Engine Brake Use Prohibited Within City Limits Except in Emergency.

So basically they help keep the truckers honest, yet leaves them an out in case they do have to tromp on em to avoid a wreck.

The trucks that irritate me the most are those idiot straight stackers that make all kinds of noise... but cant move fast to save thier soul..... even empty. Power is speed with full tonnage.

Now a straight stacker blowing by or working the gears and hauling A** with a full load---- thats a nice sight! :-laf :-laf :-laf

Yeah there are alot of you WI truckers that can't pass worth a damn on i-94. going 71mph with a car going 70mph. 10 minutes later, you get in front just intime for the car to speed up. It's always something stupid like that.

I wish I had a hood mounted wepon at times.

I hate drivers and truck drivers. they are all idiots. . PASS on the LEFT or sit in the right. LOOK IN YOUR MIRROR and respect the fact that someone is doing 15/20 over in the left only when passing. Simple huh?

Out here in MN isn't much better. 169 isn't the most fun road to be on at times.
