Is it common for the belt to eat into the tensioner arm? The arm on the tensioner looks to be leaning in towards the engine which is causing the belt to rub against it. Mine only has 173,000 miles on it. I decided to get anotherone anyway so I got lucky and found a heavy equipment dealer that deals with cummins parts and am picking one up soon (part #3912254) for $80. 00. Dodge wants anywhere from $145-160.

Only 174k? Yours is the first tensioner arm failure I've heard of on a CTD, but it is a fairly common problem on Chrysler gassers. $80 is a good deal, the wimpy ones on the gassers are twice that price.

I have had a couple of belts that were rubbing on the arm and repalced the $18 idler pulley and it fixed it on both trucks.

I did go to a case equipment dealer in south orlando the first time and got one that fits case backhoes (3. 9L) and front end loaders(5. 9L) and they have the steal pulley and are a little wider, bad thing is when I went to put it on my truck it fits totally the opposite way (upside down) compared to the ones that go on our trucks.

Ditto that - my wife's 99 V10 also had a tensioner go bad and eat a belt. Dealer charged over $100 for the part, plus labor. I have no idea how similar the parts are to the CTD - probably not at all, but if it looks crooked, I'd replace it.

I replaced mine about 2 years ago.

The PLASTIC bushing between the arm and the bracket wears out, the pully bearings are tight. This isn't to uncommon and was written up in an older issue before mine failed.

Yes Extreme1

My pully was still good and tight, but the belt seemed to favor more on the tensioner arm side rather than in the middle where it should be. It wore 3/4's width and just keeped getting closer too the tensioner arm. The plastic pulley on the new one I just put on today is kinda beveled (rounded) from side to side. This might play a part as to how it will start to wear over time. The part #3912254 has been superseded with a new part number #3935819, and if I'm not mistaken, I think it's the same one that goes on the 24 valvers also.
