This weekend I went on a test drive in a 2004. 5 2500 short bed, 4X4, quad cab, Laramie with the 325/600. As I was driving down the highway the engine started making a noise. After a couple of miles something made a huge noise and the truck quit running. I pulled over and looked under the hood and could not see anything wrong. So I looked under the truck and there was a hole in the oil pan. I am not sure what happen but I do know that I will not buy that trcuk.

:--) A hole in the engine oil pan? What shape was the hole? wasit in the front part of the pan or the back where it's deep? The dealer towed it back? We need more details here man!!!!!

I say a 460 Ford in a jet sled break a rod once and it poked a perfectly square hole through the side of the pan then wrapped up in the crank. He drove the boat (on 7 cylinders) a mile downriver and on the trailer. Some guys are just lucky.

Why were you test driving almost the same truck you own? What dealer was it, and how did you get home? Why were you checking under the hood? This seems very strange, give us more details.

Greg

I was test driving the truck because I got the bright idea that I wanted a short bed. I looked under the hood because of the noise the truck made going down the freeway. I will try to get a picture of the damage if the truck is still there. The dealer called the tow truck.

You didn't mention if there was lots of oil all over, I wonder if she was dry? Thats a few failures we've seen posted now where it seems to be assembly problems.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't understand why you would keep driving it knowing something is seriously wrong. I certainly wouldn't do that to someone else's truck - even a dealer's.

Rusty

The truck was not making any noise until we got on the freeway. we shut down as soon as possible and then it was too late. I would not drive any car or truck that was making noise if I heard the noise before the test drive.

The real question is why the dealer didn't prep the vehicle before putting it on the lot for sale/test drive. A simple check of the oil level would have save a several thousand dollar engine. And they have the nerve to charge us $300 for the dealer prep, and don't even check the oil, but they do check off all the little boxes on the paperwork. :(

Ken,

It cost a service station owner's insurance company $14K to have a 305/555 replaced in my cousin's 2003. The service station where he had the oil changed didn't tighten the drain plug - the engine went 20 miles later. The $14K doesn't include truck rental while repairs were being made.

Rusty

I would say the reason the dealer did not check it out first is because the sales person wants to sell cars really bad. He has called me when trucks arrive and are still on the transporter to come and test drive. I test drove about three that came of the truck and into the hands of the sales person.

It is hard to move to the shoulder of the road when you are it the fast lane in bumper to bumper traffic. It took a little bit to get over.
