Honest opinions on the powerstroke - Puhleezze???

Snowplowing

Today, whilst my '98 2500 was in for a couple recalls, I walked next door and test drove an '03 Duramax (4x4, short bed, 'quad cab', cloth power seat). List price was $40,000.

It accelerated nicely and drove nicely. The diesel clatter threatened to appear from time to time, then would go away again. It likes to run around 2500-3000 RPM, especially in tow mode. T/C lockup seemed odd and inconsistent; there was no telling when it would lock up and if it would stay locked up.

General things it has are 4 wheel disk brakes, zerk fittings on the ball joints, narrow-neck fuel filler tube.

There were some definite negatives. The cab door window latches have protrusions from the injection molding process that are sharp enough to tear skin. The console is small-ish. The seat was not comfortable for my body, and it doesn't go up high enough. The doors on the left side need to be slammed to close properly. The engine sounds like a V8, not a diesel. The turning radius seemed to be 2-4 feet wider than my '98 2500 LWB. Oh, and if the gauge near the bottom left of the cluster is an EGT gauge, it had to be malfunctioning - it never moved from 160. Oh, wait, now that I think about it, that's probably a trans temp gauge, so 160 is probably about right.

The oddest thing appeared when the trans was in tow mode. The trans would downshift as speed dropped in order to maintain revs and power, which is generally a good thing. It was disconcerting that when I was slowing down with my foot on the brake, the trans would downshift, but the engine *still* rev'ed up, pushing the truck for just a moment or two.

*I* wouldn't buy one. It just isn't comfortable enough for me. It's also much too 'GM'y. It's hard to explain; all I can say is that it just isn't my kind of truck.

Why, you ask, did I test drive it? Well, the dealer sent me something giving away 114-piece tool kits just for walking in the door. Whilst there, I figured I might as well test drive one, just to see what all the hoopla's been about. *I* didn't see it. It's just another GM pickup, though the engine does seem to be nice to drive.

Besides, it gave me something to do while awaiting the completion of the recall work on my truck. I would have driven a common-rail Cummins, but they won't be availble 'til mid-late September. Sales droid says Mexico is already assembling the new trucks, but they're being held for QA testing and so suitable quantities can be shipped to dealers.

Enough babbling. Just thought I'd share my opinion and notes.

A duramax is not for me either. we have one at work that I have to drive. The truck is now about 20 days old and has had 2 problems with it already.

1) when it gets wet or muddy out there is a connection down by the transmission that either comes loose or gets wet. It sends it into 3rd gear limp mode. This happened when the truck was 8 days old. So I phoned up the trusty GM dealer and the knuckle head procededs to tell me to bring the truck in, there is an updated part that seals better than the other. I told him updated???????????? The truck is 8 days old and there are already updated parts not being installed? Then he tells me they get tons of calls when it rains out and gets a little muddy. Anyways after rolling around in the mud I get the connection dry and back together.

2) 14 days old... ..... Fuel gauge, tach, speedo, trans temp, engine temp and various other electrical things are not working. Still driving around with no gear selector indicator. I checked fuses... ..... no dice.

Other observations I have noticed.

Ride quality... ... . Absorbs the bumps better than my truck. When on rough roads though it has a soft mushy feeling about it. Almost too soft to where it does not feel like I am in control of it. Wants to bounce and slide around a little more.

Power... ... ... A whole lot of hype. After all the talk of I have seen I was expecting some tire scortching mounting climbing beast. Nope. Under 2600 RPM I feel it is very sluggish. Going uphills of about 6% grade I can keep depressing the fuel pedal while it is staying in OD. When doing this it will go to about 3/4 throttle with hardly any acceleration. It will then kick out of OD and scream to 3000 rpm and will then gain speed going up the hill. If it has 520 ft lbs of torque like they say it does from 1700 - 3000 I sure don't feel it. Now don't get me wrong, it does have decent power, I was just led to beleive it would have alot more.

transmission... ..... I don't mind the transmission. It seems to shift ok and I will admit the tow haul engine braking thing is neat.

Comfort... ... ... . It is not bad. I don't mind the dash layout if it would work. Seats are OK.

Engine noise... ... well it is quieter than my old goat..... but it still has that anoying 6. 5l sound to it. Just don't make me puff out my chest! :D It does have a fair bit of noise when I thought they were supposed to be real quiet.

All in all, I think I will save 52,000 and a whole bunch of headaches and keep my old goat. No Duramax in my future.

On a side note, this truck will never see the pavement and is driven on oilfield roads in Norhtern Brithish Columbia. IMHO it is already starting to show signs of being a city only truck with these little problems popping up. No clearance and city suspension. Another thing I have noticed are the rims are getting some BAD groves on them. This is from rocks getting caught inbetween the rims and the rear brake calipers. They cut deep groves in the aluminum rims and make them prone to a total failure.

Brand loyalty/dishonesty among diesel owners?

You guys should read this. It is in the general diesel forum.

Here's my input!

Before jd jumps in and brands me a kowtower :) (and how's that for a nifty word while halfways intoxicated?! ) my disc braked 2001. 5 2500 catches rocks between calipers and rims and cuts grooves as well... ... . the parking brake doesn't work hardly at all anymore either... ... what else can I whine about? It smokes too much... ..... :D

There is a compressor company around these parts that has a multiple # (not sure exactly how many-more than 3-less than 20-how's that?) of Duramax/ZF 3500's. These trucks are replacing 3500 CTD/5 or 6 speed depending on vintage. I have talked to 3 mechanics now with the Duramaxes and specifically asked them how they pull against the CTDs. Wanna take a guess at the answer? :) Not nearly as good... ... . funny thing when you don't have the magic Allison grabbing at straws everytime it can how the short-stroke torque issue rears its ugly head. Can't wait to see how they hold out long-term.....

Some CHOW .........

Hey what can I say???????

I JUST... . "LOVE MY TRUCK"... ... HMMMM? Where did I hear, see, that before?????:-laf :-laf :-laf

No Dura-whatever in my future either.

Sounds like GM has one thing on our CTD's, zerk fittings. Sure wish DC would smell the coffee and put them back where they belong.

jdecampo,

It may be a bit of brand loyalty... ... . but I was not blown away with this truck. It is only 3 weeks old and has had 2 different problems. Not my truck, so what do I care. Like I said before I was expecting alot more than what this truck is. I was currious with all the hype and I now know what the truth is with this one truck in particular. Seems to have a low power problem. It felt real weak today. Don't know if it is related to the no gauge issue, but I am still not all that impressed with the Duramax. Sorry if I am not totally in love with this truck... ... ...

My neighbor has one and he has the same problem when it rains, goes into limp mode or something, and the drivers side door doesn't fit right have to slam it,dealer told him it was normal for the door ,he didn't get an answer on the rain thing.

But it sure sounds nice;)

The wifes boss has a Dmax and he loves it. I haven't gone for a ride with him yet. The other day I was coming up the Hwy and I saw him comming. I dialed her up to 5x5 and gave him a full load of black soot. When I lifted I was about a quarter mile ahead of him. He pulled into the lot at his shop and asked if I had a Banks kit on my truck. I just kinda laughed and Said no. what are you talking about. He said that he couldn't catch me and wanted to know what I have done... ... ... ... ..... I just Smiled... ... ... ... . Greg

I must admit I kind of like the way they look but as far as driving one I have never thought about it. It was bad enough a couple of weeks ago I was in South Texas hog hunting and had to drive a Ford gasser. At least it was 4 wd. I told my truck when I got home not to be mad at me as I was just helping out the owner as he got some bad mexican food in Del rio and wasn't felling too good.

I have a challenge for the Duramax crowd, that i know they cant win.

buy a new truck off the dealer lot. go ahead and make your best deal you can (you'll need it :D) (I personally got mine for $6218 under the window sticker 34,900 list, i paid 28,682)

next drive said truck for 16 months, put 50,000 miles on it in that time and then sell the truck for $4000 dollars less than you bought it for not what you owe, what you paid for it NEW (I sold mine is this condition for $24,500). i can drive a new Dodge every two years and pay $3000 a year to do it. try that with a Dollarmax :p Plus it only took me three weeks with small white lettering on the front and rear glass to sell it.

first of all by the time you get unburried from overpaying (sticker price only to get 0% deal) and all the crap they stack on for your super duper 0% financing blunder (extended this, prolonged that), it would be three years before you would right yourself out from under that loan. and at that point you would still owe $4000 more than a three year old truck with high miles on it would be worth.

OK you can get your own financing (the only way to go IMO) you are still will within $3000 of the list price for the truck(dealers wont deal on them). now you have a loan that costs you $100-150 a month more than its counter part would in a Dodge. that's $1200-1800 more a year to drive a Dollarmax. now, I ask again, can you get that back with 50,000 miles on a 1 and 1/2 old Dollarmax?

Todd, You can't count your deal as a guaranteed value for all Dodge trucks. Some guys get more money for their trucks because of the condition or they find someone that doesn't care about price and buys what they want. I have a friend who only buys used vehicles because he thinks he gets a better deal. Most of the time he pays 1 or 2 thousand less than brand new on a 1 year old vehicle.

Joe you cant count the value of any deal. that's why its called a fair market value. that is how the folks at NADA made their fortune

you can look at any used truck price across the country and the Dodge will carry its value more and longer than a Duramax or Ford

dont forget to take off for high mileage :D

I'm glad you're happy but go talk to someone who bought a 2000 or 2001 and is trying to sell it. they will be easy to find, standing in the puddle from the blood bath they just took.

Todd, I have the new Want Ad in front of me and I can find no D-Max trucks in there. I can find plenty of 02 Cummins powered Rams. The newest one is a Quad cab ST 4X4 long bed with with 3500 miles for 24,000. Dodge does not hold it's value as well as Ford or GM.

These trucks were priced out with 50,000 miles on them and they are 4X4

01 D-Max 2500 HD loaded, Leather and all the toys. $32,905

01 D-Max same as above but a 6spd

$31,770

01 Cummins 2500 Quad cab H. O. 6spd loaded leather and all the toys #29,735.

01 Cummins same as above except with the auto and no H. O.

$28,240

Now these trucks sticker roughly the same so I can't see where you got your info from. Now I know some dealers don't give a good deal and others will pay more than they should but any truck made today can be had for $49 over invoice which is a good deal.

I was at the Dodge Dealer yesterday BS'ing with the mechanic and sitting outside was an 02 Dura-whatever that was just traded on a CTD. I bet he took a beating... There was an 01 PowerStroke w4d too, same story. Atleast these two traded for the best!!!

I paid 32,500 for my 01, 4WD. Everything except leather. That is $2700 difference, they sure hold their value, just like Todd said.

Doesn't leather ad $1000?

jdecampo, I dont know how much leather adds, if it said leather on the stricker I kept walking. I wonder how well leather holds up over the years?
