I am going to replace the oil in my 6spd today with Redline MTL. It's physical properties are very close to the factory 1874 MTX, which by the way is not synthetic... but parafin based.

I initially thought the STF 1874 stood for Synthetic Transmission Fluid..... but it actually stands for Syncromesh Transmissiln Fluid.

... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . MTX... ... ... . MTL

Pour point F... ... ... ... -50... ... ... . -58

Viscosity @-40C... ... 256P... ... . 160P

Viscosity @40C... ... . 41. 6cSt... . 50. 8cSt

Viscosity @100C..... 9. 08cSt... . 10. 2cSt

Viscosity Index... ... . 208... ... ... . 171

Flash Point... ... ... ... . 385F... ..... 450F

Both are very close to SAE 5w30 engine oil or SAE 70w80 gear oil

but as you can see the synthetic flows MUCH better at low temperatures than MTX due to the Viscosity Index and Viscosity at -40C

The oil is in. I went for a long drive to warm things up. It shifts like it did before I had the clutch replaced, possibly better. The oil I removed looked almost brand new. The clutch shop may have put the wrong stuff back in.

My gearbox is a little notchy, but it has never liked to be slapped around. It loves double clutching and a delicate touch when shifting. It is also easier to get back into gear while stopped. I have noticed that if the truck is rolling just a little it is very easy to get into gear, but there have been times where it needed a good pull to get into 2nd.

Cliff, now that you've had that stuff in for a couple weeks, are you still liking it? I need to change my trans oil but am afraid to put anything in but the Texaco stuff from the dealer. I think there is more to oil than comparing viscosities, pour points, etc. and I thought "gear oil" has additives for extreme, low speed pressures that is not typically found in engine oil. I could be wrong though.

I have a gallon of Amsoil 5W30 synthetic I am thinking about putting in too but wish there was more of a track record on using engine oil in the NV5600. They are too expensive to fix if you mess em up.

Amsoil 5W30 HDD is perfect for the six-speeds

I have been running this oil in my six-speed for 18,000 miles now.

Absolutely no problems. Shifts are smoother than stock at any temperature. I am going to grab a sample and have it analyzed soon. I will post the results at that time.

I have maybe 4000 miles on Amsoil series 3000 5W-30 in my DEE 6 speed transmission, 27,000 total miles on truck. Not one single problem yet.

thanks guys

Yogibear, Riflesmith, DFreak, TomG. . . thanks for the input, I think I will be able to try the Amsoil now and not have to worry about it. Since Yogi's gone almost 100,000 miles with it that is a very good sign :)

Texaco MTX 1874

Managed to find and buy a 5 gallon pail of Texaco MTX 1874 from the Texaco wholesaler in Reno. ($64 + Tax or $3. 40/quart). Have no way to re-package the oil but happy to share with anyone close enough to come by.

They had at least one more pail when I purchased one, about a month ago.

Good Luck,
