Posted this as a follow up to LP survey, but wanted to know if you think I should start saving for a VP44 and what those dudes cost. This truck doesn't see much heavy duty use so... .

99/2500/quadcab/2wd/3. 54 rear gear/auto trans/stock

170,872 LP replaced because of all of the comments on this board. Cummins South did the work (I'm lazy) and fuel pressures were 8 at idle and 2-4 above idle. Local Dodge house had checked pressures at 155k and said everything was ok.

I think they were incorrect as ever since my filter change at 125k I've had to prime the filter bowl (when changing the fuel filter) to get the truck running so I suspect the LP has been in trouble for long time. Its amazing how much better the truck runs now, just hope I haven't screwed up the VP44.....

Thanks for all of your help and for this site.

Peace,

Don:

Honestly can't say about the VP, other than it sounds suspect.

Also, I would be kicking that dealer in certain body parts over what you have said! :p

vp-44 life

i have a 1998. 5 with 286,000 km. or 170,000k . its on lp #4 but still has original vp44. still runs and starts great. i was a diesel mechanic for 15 years and most of the problems i saw were caused by water and dirt. the loss of the lp for very long can damage the vp44. good luck with it. :) :)
