... for all the helpful info in the late, great Amsoil thread - recent developments, and newer pending ones, as brought out in that thread have swayed my thinking on synthetics, and Amsoil in particular - I consider that to have been a very informative and helpful thread!

It WAS interesting to note that along WITH reduced wear protection as described relative to the current specifications for diesel lubricating oils, Cummins is stating their newly DOUBLED oil change intervals - but ALSO interesting that apparently the API has backed off the implementation of the latest proposed oil upgrade (that responds to concerns about catalytic converter damage with current levels of anti-wear compounds in lube oils) that would reduce wear preventing compounds even further...

Wonder WHY... :p ;) :D

Maybe SOME engine manufacturers would prefer to see their engines enjoy the lifespan they were designed for, and NOT be sacrificed on the EPA'S altar of supposedly reduced emissions?

Warren - it's my understanding that the '03 Cummins is spec'd for TWICE the mileage between oil changes compared with previous years engines - partly due to engine technology - part due to new API spec oils that suspend soot particles better - NOT necessarily a good thing if some wear protecting additives are reduced to "protect" catalytic converters...

*I* sure don't see MORE accumulated soot over a doubled oil change interval and LESS wear preventing additives as a "GOOD" combination... :(

AS far as extended oil change intervals are concerned, It's my understanding that this has been common practice in Europe for some time now - REGARDLESS of whether dino, or synthetics are in use - supposedly, dino oils are usually good for about 32,000 miles in extended service, compared with perhaps 100,000 miles with synthetics - following good maintenance practice and regular filter changes of course...
