Hey I know what you mean. I bought geno's catch bottle. When I moved it, I was very happy with the results. That odor after oil change was gone and no more mess. There is a lot of option for fixing the problem, but this is the one I pick for me. #ad

Yeah my mother, who drives the school bus route, was complaining about that smell after an oil change for the bus.

Another option is to remove the bottle that came with the truck and run heater hose toward the back of the truck.

I use Shell Rotella-T 15W-40 and did have a slight smell in the cab before I ran the heater hose. I used 8 feet of hose and ran it down near the starter, into the frame, then back out near the middle of the truck where there is a cross member. Point the hose downward so any fumes that condense drip out. That is why I did not run the hose any further back inside the frame because I was worried that fumes would condense out in a low spot, fill the hose and stop any fumes from escaping.

The only problem with this is that I have had a co-worker ask me why I smelled like diesel. I told her it was my new cologne, Cummins.

I just changed over to Delo-400 from Rotella. I got no smell from Delo. The Rotella was very stinky. I will use Delo from now on.

2$ Worth I have heard of this before and found out a thing or so. Since NEW (up til 800 miles when I found the problem)99-01 Valve Cover gaskets in the rear of the motor have either crumbled or been pinched out of place during assembly. There is a Technical service bulliten about the oil smell entering the cab after oil changes and has re occured even after emptying the bottle. Brought mine in and bingo after showing the tech the NEW oil residue on the back of the valve cover they soon found the tsb (hmmm handy diag tool at alldata.com)Fixed and gone for good.

sdalton, the Delo won't eliminate the smell. My Rams and tractors all stink after a Delo oil change, and have for the last 25 years. My Chevron jobber told me that the smell comes from a wax type additive that is used to keep the oil additives in suspension during storage, when the oil is heated the wax burns off and causes the smell. It could be that Rotella has more of this additive and thus stinks more.

I never thought it smelled bad, I certainly wouldn't describe it as "horrible"... . From the time I was big enough(3 years old) to use a creeper to scoot under my daddy's Ford dump trucks, and Mack tractors with Fruehauf dumps, stick my entire arms in drums of axle grease, and goose the mechanics with compressed air, I loved the smell of oil, and diesel. It gets in your blood. Running Amsoil now, I really miss that "real truck" smell I would get at oil changes.
To each, his own... .

Facing the engine, the blow-by-bottle is just to the right of the center line about half way down the engine. It is a small plastic "pill" bottle about the size of a 250 count aspirin bottle with holes in the side.

I checked mine at about 3,000 miles and oil had already blown by (hence the name?) the holes onto the engine.

I went to O'Reilly's in the nearest town and picked up a hose connector (plastic) and 8 feet of heater hose. I already had some plastic cable ties that I used to tie the hose down so it wouldn't flop around.

Rather than the plastic loop that holds the bottle to the engine, I used some metal pipe strapping to hold the hose in place so it doesn't move.

Let me know if you need anything else. BTW, I think this qualifies as my first BOMB!

Very cost effective and plentiful source for blow by bottle.
1. Get a small Aberfoyle Springs 16. 9 OZ bottle.
2. Drink the water or pour it out.
3. Take a pocket knife with a sharp point and make about 8 1/8" holes all the way around the top of the bottle.
4. Get a hose clamp that will fit over the mouth of the bottle. Put it on there and snug it up just a little.
5. Get your creeper and go under the truck near the driver side door. And roll up to the blow by hose. Slide bottle onto hose about an inch or so and tighten until you can't pull it off. If you have a 24 Valve Engine it will be on the front of the engine. Much easier.
6. Empty or replace the bottle at each oil change and think about the $40. 00 you saved by making your own drip bottle.
