Another Newbie New To Diesels

Gentlemen,

I find myself at am impasse... Having been reading and researching the Cummins Powertrain for sometime, the majority of which time has been spent here in the TDR, I was sitting with pen on the signature line purchasing a new 2006 QC 2500 4x4 CTD Short Bed SLT, when I overhear a passing service tech jabbering about the 6. 7L CTD. I glance over at my salesman, who has been an incredibly patient man through my Q&A and research process, and he gives me this shoulder shrugg attempting to imply complete ignorance. I lay down the pen and chase down the service tech and begin picking his brain on the 6. 7l. As I suspected he didnt really have any hard evidience supporting his jaqbber other than the mythical option shown in the latest release of the parts manual. The reality of my personal situation is that I will never have any significant need for any more power than is avilable stock from the 5. 9CTD and certainly never more than is avilable from the same engine with a few select mods. None the less the 6. 7lCTD has capture my imagination and I find myself obsessed with it...

Does anyone out here have any firm evidence supporting the impending release of the 6. 7CTD powertrain?

Welcome to TDR!

Not sure on displacement, but '06 is the last year before the infamous '07 federal emission standards change. After reading a recent article (in the last year) in the hardcopy TDR, I recall the new '07 CTD will be a V8. Don't recall CI, but it will be a modular design w/ a V6 little brother. Higher reving to acheive a higher hp to tq ratio. Pros and cons w/ everything. :(

I think the debate about buying '06 vs. '07 is like asking ATS or DTT? Matter of opinion. The beauty about buying an '06 is you can always sell it if the '07 appears to better. Downside about buying an '07 is that you don't really want to be a guinnea pig (at least I don't ;) ). The upside is that Cummins was way ahead of the curve w/ a legal motor long before now, much less '07.

Best wishes,

Hvy

'07 CTD will be a V8

I think your mistaken. There is no debate about the cummins in our trucks being a V6 or a V8, it will be a V6. I think you may be confused because of the talk of a V8 diesel in the half tons.

6. 7 liter b is a reality, but it's a structural block (tractor engine) QSB. They are heavier than 5. 9s and designed to run at a lower RPM. I've worked on one in a GVM sprayer chassis already.

The Mercedes engine is not a 6. 7 liter, the I6 is either a 6. 4 liter or a 7. 2 liter. After spending a little time around the 4 cyl. 4. 3 liter I don't think that I want to own one of them.

I have not taken the time to check but, I believe the displacement on the Mr. Cedes bus engine is 6. 7 liter. Will this be the first of the Mercedes diesel shoved at us??????

It'll be at least 4 more years before I worry about looking for a new one.

Cummins is under contract with DC through 2010 so you shouldnt have to worry about a MB engine in our trucks until then.

When I can't buy any more parts for P-pumps and 5. 9's, then I'll start worrying about the new stuff. V8? Me, n_e_v_e_r. ;)

(goes back into cave) :-laf

When you came back from talking to the service tech, did you sign the paper or not  ;)

I feel so sorry for the folks who feel they MUST have a NEW

RIG - I mean one that already has way to much emission contole - noe the 07's will be much worse - at least a 3. 5% loss in fuel mileage and a LOT more $$$$$ for the engine. Trade magazines estimate +$2Kto $3K range - now that's for the big rigs - but there will be an increase...

True, but they can change that to put in the trucks. I don't know the weight difference, but the rumor is the redline is 3500.

I don't think the 6. 7L will be practical. It's a mega 5. 2" stroked 5. 9L, so either the deck is higher (taller, heavier engine) or else it will have unfavorable rod angles since they will be shorter due to the longer crank throws. That results in high cylinder wall loading, reducing engine life.

I've heard prices of new diesel trucks, already RIDICULOUS, will go up another $4000 to $7000 in '07 because of the new technology required to make the trucks meet '07 regulations.

Don't waste your money. Buy the '06. It is more than capable of pulling, and has proven itself for years. The '07 truck could be as bad a disaster as Ford's 6. 0 has been... I wouldn't risk it.

Hey, that's OK!!! After all, the EPA says that the consumer must pay more for an inferior product to meet some ridiculous emission standard!

Get the REAL culprit, EPA--corporate polluters, dirty power plants, etc. Stop screwing consumers who can't afford to raise a legal case against you!

Well, my truck has less than 28K miles, so it will just have to keep on doing the job.

6.7 liter

It's no rumer. It is real. Seen pictures of it and some limited info on a Cummins website. All the info was related to bus, RV, med duty, and emergency applications. No info on the Dodge version. I sure it will soon come.

Deere, let me look at their website, I can tell ya what model it was then. GVM had their prototype at our shop in June for dyno testing of the cooling system to be cummins certified.
