Here I am

The Auto let loose today

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

drag comp got me 10 more peak hp but,

rimula

First quick tale that was too funny to even tell live (I kept losing it before the end of the story):

1. Put a 20 foot bowrider behind your truck and have one of those "fast and furious" civics come up to you with the toilet pluger sticking out of the back of it. 55 on the highway and have the kid driving it mess with you, bellowing his rude bumble bee noise in your ear.

2. Get irritated with said dummy.

3. Floor truck, make turbo guage say 35PSI even though it is slipping the trans

4. Roast the kid... BAD!

5. When highway stops, after the kid went by upon you backing out of it... roll down window and tell kid that was with the air conditioner on and the transmission slipping.

6. Revel in the fact that his girlfriend is laughing at him.

7. Revel even more that the kid is just staring straight ahead and will not look at you.

8. Then, REALLY laugh when you realize that he was the leader of a pack of about ten F+F cars that are all behind him, laughing heartily at just being blown off by a paint shedding ugly Dodge 4X4 towing a BOAT no less!!!! HARDY HAR HAR!!!:D

9. Watch kid try not to cry:{

Then the not so nice story

(A week later)

1. Show friend, whos last experience with otto was in a 77 GMC with a <PUKE> 5. 7 GM Diesel.

2. Take him for a ride in your truck.

3. Push it to 22 PSI, usually not NEAR where the trans slips.

4. Let off as you reach 80 in a 35 MPH zone.

5. Feel sickening thud from under you as you release throttle.

6. Feel even sicker when you realize nothing is getting to the ground... as you coast to the side of the road.

7. Call AAA for a flatbed.

8. Try not to feel like the kid in the Honda:{ :{

9. Go drop the cash on a new transmission... .

(Boy is Momma gonna be mad)

Truck $31,000+

Amsoil bumper to bumper About $450. 00

Mods $650

Cap $1450

Auxiliary Fuel Tank $450

Michelins $670

The ability to take whichever chrysler engineer used that *&^%$ing automatic behind our engines and beat him senseless with a baseball bat... PRICELESS

Anyone know a good trans vendor in Connecticut?

I want the whole enchilada... right after I hunt down aforementioned "engineer"

Yes, be mad about these auto's. I am a 2 star AMATEUR and I now have mine in better condition than stock.

I think it is a plan to get us to buy more than 1 trans. You know keep us coming back to spend $$$.

STINKS.

This massdiesel fella Bob speaks of has a darn good rep around the TDR. Last I knew he did DTT trans work.

Get a transmission in that old bucket that will put the power down and see what you think!!! I did the slipping transmission thing for about 80K miles, I have 1600 miles on the aftermarket auto of my choice (all of a week old) and I am still surprised at how much the ol girl actually has when it is ALL going to the wheels. I will race anything but another bombed CTD if we roll on at 65 and race to 110. The 0-65 part is darn quick these days too though:D .

Thanks for the replies.

I have to figure out which one shifts in lockup, not locked up... etc.

I dont have any love or hate for any of the refitters. I don tknow that I want one that shifts in lockup though. I think it might be too violent for the tired driveline. :--) Synthetic or not, I am approaching the 400k mark:eek:

I'd guess that the input shaft broke. I've been told that some stock trucks brake them.

Do you have almost 400,000 on the original trans? If so I need to retract my statement!!!

BTW, it is tough to get any trans to hold the Cummins when she is fueled up.

My great DTT converter is perfect!

Nice tight fluid coupling really gets the truck rolling and keeps the rpm down. The fluid coupling lets the shaft and clutches have a chance to survive. And helps the lock-up clutch survive too. I am only seeing 75-100 rpm drop under most conditions when lock-up happens.

If the input shaft broke, I dont think I would have reverse. I have reverse. Reverse in "R" AND in "1"

Original Trans? No. New T/C and home-modded valve body. (This was long before they had the cool trannies) It was a beefed up stock converter. Custom welded, but it acted just like the stock one. I wish there was more known when it happened. Everything else in the trans has lol,(HAD)380,000 on it.

I wonder if I should replace the rear seal while it is out?

I mean, it should not be worn. It is only approaching 400,000 miles, right?

:D

Loved your story! I used to give those ricers a go when my trans was stock & slipping... I'd be prayin' for lockup... :D... but it is a WHOLE lot easier with a good Stator, and a TC that won't slip!

Time to do some homework. Call 'em all! ATS, Goerend, Suncoast, DTT etc.

ATS will shift locked, if you get the Controller, and if you want it to, and set it to do so. But I have to warn ya... shifting locked will put a BIG SMILE on your face!

I believe ATS is the ONLY one who beefs up the internals enough to enable the trans to shift locked safely. Their high mileage warranty backs it up!

Clint can send a complete trans anywhere, or he can find a competant trans shop in Mass. to do the rebuild. The difficult work, of manufacturing the TC and other special internal parts has all been done in Denver.

I love my ATS. It is the best thing I ever did to my truck. It's made in the USA by American Machinists, and backed by a family-owned company where the people love what they are doing. I can't say enough about Clint, Renee, Mike, Ray, and all the rest of the guys there. Here is a link to a thread I posted last year when I got back from getting my trans. Good luck!

Clint's number is 800-949-6002

scott's a very nice guy

What Bob said, ;)

I have a DTT transmission that was installed by Massdiesel. Great workmanship. I have about 20,000 miles on it and it performs flawlessly. I'm also putting about 400 HP (850 Ft Lb's of torque) to the ground with my auto.

If you want to take my truck for a test drive to know what I'm talking about - Let me know, I'm only about 15 minutes away and I don't mind driving over.

IMHO - have it done right the first time by people who know what a diesel transmission should be. Whether it be ATS, DTT or other. Oh and Massdiesel is about an hour and 15 minutes away from you.

Good luck and email me if you need a hand.

Nice to have another Connectican on board :D

i second that... . scott does great work. he will be doing my trans as soon as the time comes (not for a while) whether in my current truck or not.

Tom

If you look for someone else to install than MassDiesel is the local favorite.

If you want to install yourself the choices are many and I recommend Goerend's. If you look for TC locked shifting then Goerend's is not an option.

I got a Goerend's rebuild installed for a very reasonable price!
