Stumbled across this gem on Instagram. I know many automakers got into appliances, but International Harvester? And they made a refrigerator. This thing must have been a real tank! And it’s soooo big!

IH was into almost everything! Remember the Travelall, IH vehicle similar to a Chevy Suburban. One of my wife's girlfriends mother drove one all over town. She wore the vehicle out, driving that car/truck for over 15 years, I believe it was a mid-sixties model. What was really cool about her girlfriends’ mother was she would take that Travelall to the Country Club and park it out front right next to everyone's else Mercedes, Lincolns or Cadillac cars. She was down to earth and had no airs about her.

There are a couple mid-60s Travelalls rolling around town, here. Every now and then, a Binder club out of the valley comes up here for a meet. Mostly Scouts, even a "Farmall Fastback".

These IH Scouts and pick ups were the bread and butter of the light duty DSNY fleet during the 60’s. In fact, IH was the majority of the entire fleet.
To get my job, I had to wire, fire up and tune a IH 501 inline 6 and make run right.

4 Barrel Carb, right??

Previously I mentioned that the DSNY had a lot of IH in its fleet during the 50-60’s. I thought I’d share some of that thanks to a dear friend of mine who’s a retired DSNY mechanic and an extreme truck nerd. He’s also a CTD owner. I’m still trying to get him to join the TDR.

Here is a light wrecker- such a rare piece. It probably had a 345 in it by the V on the fender and it’s 4WD.

A Bucket truck on the ramp going into our (still active) Central Repair Shop in Maspeth, Queens.

Still in our fleet today, and kept in that shop. The 501 I mentioned before is in this truck. It goes out to special events and parades. It is functional and can go out in collection if it was needed.
