Took the car in for a change at the local Fast Lube, and asked them to recycle some used Amsoil I brought from home.

The kid gets all big-eyed when he sees the Amsoil containers.

Him: Do you use this Amsoil?

Me: Yes.

Him: How long do you go between oil changes?

Me: [thinking I don't like where this is going and I'm NOT going to argue about it with this kid... ]

"It varies - mumble mumble, 10k, 15k, maybe more now that I've added the bypass filter. "

At this point, I'm thinking he's either going to ask me what a bypass filter is, or tell me about 3k oil changes. He starts off by saying they see a lot of problems with Amsoil users, BECAUSE...

Some of the Amsoil users never change their air filters or check their other fluid levels, since they rarely open the hood. Then he proceeds to tell me about one diesel truck he saw that when they opened up the air box, the filter was both clogged and tattered up because it had been in there so long.

He never said a word about the long drain intervals. He just wanted to make sure I had changed my air filter and checked other fluid levels. I don't think anyone on this site would have let other maintenance go like that, but I thought this story would amuse the other Amsoil users. :)

I would thin moest of us dieselaholics would be under the hood a lot, just to admire the Cummins!. But I have to agree a little bit with him,I have family relatives that do just what he said, the run Mobil 1 oil,and never check anything, they run it 10K miles, and never open the hood!. I service them for them, they are so crusty under the hood, its scarey, the oil is usually low,and looks more like crude oil, than motor oil. I changed one air filter that was so plugged that the media actually tore from being sucked in,and it was breathing unfiltered air . I tell them that they need to cut the oil change interval in 1/2 but they wont listen, none have had any engine trouble yet,but i gotta feeling its going to catch up to them one day.

Re: Re: The Fast Lube warned me about Amsoil...

That's because he knows it is good for as long as the engine lasts!!! LOL ;)

You may be on to something! Why pay for that expensive Cummins "Centinel" system to burn your oil? Just never change the oil OR the filter. At some point the engine will start burning enough oil that changes will no longer be needed, just keep her topped up with more oil as the old stuff burns out! Of course, I'll have to switch back to Dino oil to be able to afford this option... ;)

Fast Lube(Quickey)

Comming from somebody at one of them places I'm not even going to comment on there remarks. :-{}

That is a concern. People put good oil in-and totally neglect the rest of the vehicle.

I thought for sure the kid was going to start preaching the 3000 sales pitch!

Speaking of sales pitchs- One of my quik lubes started selling a ton of Amsoil. I asked the owner, what gives?

The new kid he says, when people ask him what oil we have, he says Amsoil, Mobil 1, and a bunch of "CHEAP" stuff!

Most people don't want "cheap" stuff for their car! LOL!

What is funny, is they go in for the cheap $14. 99 lube change, and leave paying twice that for better oil. Go figure.

This is a little of the subject..... When I tell people at work I do my own oil changes on parents, financee's and my vehicles they give this strange look. They say they can go to jiffy lube and get it done for 15. 00 or so. I tell them I do it because I use certain brands of oil/filter and let it drain for a long time. I also take this time to inspect the engine and fill up on fluids. I also make sure to pre-fill the oil filters before mounting and clean the oil filter threads and remove metal shavings before install.

I wouldn't let my dog stop at one of those places for a pit stop! And your'e going listen to the "kid"? "Out of the mouths of babes".

A co-worker went to Jiffy, or the like, and the red light came on the next day ON THE FREEWAY... pan plug missing! A letter from a lawyer made the lube place eat costs.

I knew my favorite distributor would have a way to twist the post into a marketing tool!

And the sad part is, after you are done explaining all this they still have that strange look on their face.

Maybe it's just me but I've known five people who have driven away from four different quick lubes with no oil. They didn't get very far...

I had a friend get the jiffy shaft once long ago.

The engine starts knocking just as the oil light comes on.

He calls Mr. Jiffy and explains the problem.

Mr. Jiffy arrives about 15 minutes later with 5 quarts of oil,new filter and low and behold he brought a new oil plug!

He had the nerve to tell my friend how lucky he was that it did not lock up the engine.

About 15 minutes later full of oil its starts, knocks and smokes.

Mr. Jiffy stood by with a nervous smile on his face(hopeing my buddy would just drive off).

Mr. Jiffy paid for a brand new engine.

I guess there are benifits to fast lubes.

WOW!!!

WE ACTUALLY HAVE A POST WITH THE WORD "AMSOIL" IN IT THAT HAS NOT TURNED INTO A BATTLE!!!

How refreshing! Keep up the good work, guys!

:) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Sure dont know how he can equate a brand name to someone thats too lazy to maintain their vehicle.

Seems anyone conscious enough to pick amsoil over a major brand, would also be the type that maintains there rig.

Sounds like this guy is a major BS'er.

It seemed strange to me too, that's why I thought the story worth sharing. But if you read Snow Man's post above, apparently some people do these strange things - buying good oil, and then thinking they've done all they have to do. Maybe they just bought Amsoil because somebody told them it was "better than Mobil 1".

HC ,you hit it on the head, they think because they are runnin Mobil 1,that they are doing the ultimate in good for their engine, and they no longer have to keep a close eye on other items. That the oil will more than make up for any deficiency that they have made. I told them all to run dino oil,Ill change it at 3000 miles,or run the bypass filter, and step up air filter maintance,I feel you should not be extending oil change intervals with any oil, without a bypass filter, and oil analysis.

This summer when I was working in Price, UT. My girlfriend came up tp visit me, any way she needed her oil changed, I didn't have time to do it so I sent here so the local penzoil Quick Stop. Then she headed home, she got a few miles from town and the truck just wouldn't run. She called me up on my cell phone, I asked the boss if I could leave for a few minutes. To make along story short her truck is a power stroke, they only put in 11 quarts of oil (needs 14), the injectors are hydraulic actuated. Needless to say it wouldn't run. We took it to a stealer, he said she was lucky to even have an engine. The oil change place would except to responsibilty for the screw up.

So if you are out of town, or in Price, don't go to the penzoil shop... ... ...

OK, I admit, I took the wife's car to the Fast Lube. (Book value <5k, and we're thinking about trading anyway. )

But everything on this thread is convincing me that the number one advantage to a bypass filter / extended drain strategy may NOT be the oil! The number one advantage might be that it minimizes the number of times anyone but me can get under the hood!

The one and only time I took my wife's 98 Honda Civic to a quick-lube, I stood there and watched the "tech" pour almost SEVEN quarts of oil in the hole before he "~wondered" if something was wrong.
