With this post, I am thanking Steve for working hard to produce a quality Forum Board for TDR.
Much of the problems attributed to the new software, in reality, have resided in our PCs. The new vB 3. x software pushes our operating systems harder, and those of us using PCs older than 3 years don't have the necessary BIOS and I/O configurations to cope with it.
Steve, thank you for putting up with all of my BS on this subject. It wasn't cookie cutters or virus programs or robots. It was a "dead" operating system that needed a bootstrap to bring it into the 21st Century.
**** Windows Systems Only **** Macintosh users need not apply ****
Okay all of you who have been having menu problems. Slow thread loading, and general lethargy of the villian we call our PC.
I stumbled onto this fix (and it is a real fix, not a crutch) because I installed a digital flat panel screen on my work PC.
That resulted in my having to replace my video card, a project that still has not had a happy ending.
However, on the trail of what-to-do about it, I discovered that the Intel main board bios and graphics drivers and I/O drivers were grossly out-of-date in my PC.
After I installed the correct drivers and INF files- BOOM! now TDR pages load in 2-3 seconds flat on my work PC. This is one helluva improvement from the 35-60 seconds I have been suffering under.
Here is a more or less accurate (grain of salt) way to go about it. (I didn't take notes, darn it)
1) Determine what system drivers you have:
* Windows-key + Break key
* Hardware tab
* Device Manager
* System Devices
* Take note of the AGP & I/O numbers. My motherboard uses
..... the 82815 chipset. Yours may be the 82810 or other-
*
*Close the System Properties windows.
2) Get the files you need
* Surf over to support. intel.com
* Click on Downloads in the left center part of the screen.
* Click on Chipsets in the frame on the left side of the screen.
* Select the appropriate system. ie, Desktop Chipsets
* Select the proper family to match your motherboard. This
... ... will be the last three digits of the chipset number.
* Select your operating system. Mine was Win2000
* In my case, I needed #2 and #4 executables. You have a choice
... ... of either the EXE files or ZIP files. EXEs are easier.
*
* Download these files. Install the INF files first, reboot and
... ... then install the accelerator files. Reboot again.
For me, the difference was night and day. 45 second thread downloads transitioned into 2 seconds for the TDR "Last Days Posts" and 2-3 seconds for the threads to come up.
Well worth the effort.
Enjoy-
John
Steve- this might be worth a sticky for current and new to arrive TDR members.
