What gets me is you are doing this without smoke! Your burnout video proves that, 99% of that smoke was from your tires!



My lucas injectors are a lot dirtier than what I saw with yours. I'm running a Flo-Pro muffler and 16cm2 turbo housing - any idea how big of power difference is the 12cm2 turbo housing you are running? What about the straight exhaust you are running vs the muffler I am running?

There is a haze at WOT, not sure just what to do about it. I think if I got a 4inch exhaust, it would help. I have been moving the timing back and forth, and noticed that farther advanced smokes more, as well as retarding from where it is. I am about at the point I'm going to get the tools out and do the work to determine the exact numerical timing. Before I do that, I'm considering pulling theinjectors, and with all the talk here about washer size influencing smoke, trying some thinner injector sealing washers.



There is also some "transitional" smoke. It will do it anytime you transition from lightly loaded to heavy quickly. I think if I got a boost gauge, and figured out at what boost level the smoke occurs, I could put the pump on the test stand and tune it, delaying full fuel just a little. It shows in the video, and it does it before I actually nail the pedal the rest of the way and let off the brakes



It would be less responsive, but I don't see that as a problem. I am also somewhat under the impression if my converter would hold the engine rpm down, I would get more smoke. On the other hand, the engine would breath better, so maybe it would smoke less... ??? Not sure.



I would guess that the 12CM housing loses horsepower for me, as it gets restrictive at high rpm, but the responsiveness is amazing. You punch it from an idle at standstill and the truck moves perhaps 2-3 feet before you reach high boost - as you can hear the turbo whistle. I can't imagine there being a faster spooling combo. Dropping the muffler and fixing the crushed tailpipe was done back when it had the 18. 5 housing, and that in itself was a big difference in spool up and smoke. Previous to the exhaust work, my truck trailed a steady stream of black stuff when you mashed the pedal - much more than now. After changing the turbo and NOT doing the injectors or turning up the fuel, the truck made no visible smoke at any time, under any conditions.
 
Thanks for the info about how you got your truck where it is. Yep, I do have a reasonable setup to avoid power loss being a 5spd 2wd.



Wonder if 6000' elevation is part of the smoke problem and if it affects power much with a turbo? I know my gas truck gets dog slow up here compared to sea level, but I understand the turbo really negates most of the elevation loss.



I'll probably continue to move the timing around too, try to find the sweet, less smokey spot! Should be around 1. 3, as it was static timed at 1. 25 when I put the pump in, and then backed the engine off 1/8th turn. I've since then retarded it a touch, but plan on moving it back - the truck runs < smokey and more powerful on cooler mornings when the KSB is engaged.



Just ordered a westach, so I'll finally know the boost and egt. At least I'll be able to note some of the affect of timing with a gauge.

6000 feet? Oh, YES, it has a huge impact on smoke.



At that altitude, I would be concentrating on any idea I could think of to improve airflow in and out. Turbos do help compensate for altitude, but only partially. You'll need higher boost levels than at seal level for the same oxygen content, and in all probability, need to try timing it all over - I'd suggest anywhere between 1. 4 and 1. 9, driving it a short while at each and then moving in the direction of greatest benefit and trying it again.
