Ok, I have heard two theories on replacing the oil pan on my 94 2500 4X4. One is that the trans and transfer need to be removed. The other one involves just breaking loose the motor mounts and the fan, jacking the engine up. Before I attempt this repair I need to know which way to do it.

Does anyone know where to get an affordable oil pan?

Thanks for your help - this site has already been extremely helpful

I have replaced my oil pan gasket before and it was MUCH easier with the transmission out of the truck along with removing the clutch housing plate on the back of the engine. You will have to jack the engine up somehow, I used a basic engine cherry picker. I raised my engine about 6-8 inches or when the rear valve cover came pretty close to the top of the firewall. Didn't have to mess with the fan as I recall, I think I just removed the shroud to gain the clearance I needed. You can get away with the trans in the truck but it is a PITA to get the gasket installed and leak free when done.

What's wrong with your original oil pan? Did you dent it up somehow??

Thanks for the reply. No, the oil plan is a victim of about 8 years of northeastern salt damage. The rust is so bad i could very easily poke a hole through the pan with stick. There are a lot of oil leaks on the truck, this will knock out one of them and replace the pan that will leave me high and dry one night.

The truck has an auto trans, will that make a difference with leaving the trans in the truck?

if you jack it up, you will have to reach your arm in and unbolt the pickup tube to slide it out. I hear ya on the NE salt My oil pan looks exactly the same...

check out redlinear on ebay. he is a seller of tons of used cummins parts. You can do a search for his seller name, or search cummins oil pan and should come up w/something.

I dont know if the 12 + 24 valve pans are interchangeable

Yes the 12v and 24v will interchange I would not even try to remove the pan with the trans and adaptor on the engine lift the engine about 6" and it will just slide by the oil pickup tube
