That's right. I picked up a pre-owned 2000 Ford Excursion Ltd 4x4 PSD. My local Ford dealer always told me "there's no replacement for displacement", so when he asked how I liked the PSD, I told him "it's not a Cummins, but it'll do". One thing's for sure: The PSD aint pretty like the simple and elegant Cummins. It took me ten minutes just to find the turbo and the valve covers. It doesn't start instantly either, but takes 2-3 seconds crank time, similar to a gasser. Ford says this is normal. According the the Ford site, I should check my turbo bolts every 1000 miles 'cause they like to fall out. The PSD has a nice tone at idle and on the road the engine is much quieter than the Cummins. Performance is similar to a stock Cummins and not even in the same universe as my bombed Ram. I like the transmission. Compared to the stock Dodge trans, the ford auto drops 400 to 600 rpm on shifts. Sometimes the engine has trouble keeping up with the transmission. (enter TTS chip). Highway fuel economy is 20mpg, pretty respectable for a 7500lb vehicle. Even with 3. 73 gears, the Ex revs only 1800 at 65mph. I wanted the Ex as a family hauler. Given the size and weight of the rig the choice of diesel over gas (a thirsty V10) was really a no-brainer, especially for me. I feel sorry for the folks getting 10mpg with their gassers. The Diesel will pay for itself in three years or less. One thing I'm not sorry for is keeping my Ram.
I think I've got the best of both worlds. A Cummins in my work truck, and a PSD in my station wagon.
