The recession must be over. Just came back from a few days of deer hunting. (didnt go last year because of a medical issue)

Got a nice camping place in the area I usually like to go. But, Ive never seen so many hunters up in there. It was almost like a small city. And the hunters. Ive never seen so many of those huge white field tents that can probably sleep 10 or 15 people. (probably not that many folks in the individual camps, but there were a lot). And those big tents are pretty expensive, aren't they ? And many of the camps themselves were huge. Many with not only 2 or 3 large trailers, but with multiple of the large tents. The other night I looked across the road at a camp maybe 150 yards from me. The lights made it look like a small city. In that particular camp, they actually built a cabin in addition to everything else.

And, most of the hunters looked like they were wearing brand new camouflaged hunting suits from Cabelas. And, the number of folks driving quads was almost crazy.

Needless to say, I dont think anyone got a deer while I was up there. Just too many humans.

I need to find a new place to go.

Just my venting.

You may have run onto one of BO's civilian army camps although I doubt they would buy their camo at Cabellas, maybe Nieman Marcus. ? bg

My bet is with most of the federal land closed it pushed more hunters to state run properties.

The problem with hunting is most people do it for the sport now a Days. Who has the best equipment, the nicest gear, the newest scope, it goes on and on. It blows my mind to listen to some of the guys at work talk about all "the latest and greatest". I'm still shooting guns that were handed down to me from pops years ago. They fill the freezer just the same.

I hunted for years with my dad's hand me down Winchester, no scope, and an orange vest with lots of layers under. I can remember being out there just freezing but man if felt like you accomplished something when you brought one home.

I don't own a set of camo to this day, Carharts and a vest is all I've ever worn.

:)

If it means anything, my blaze orange coat is from Wal-Mart. ;)

I wouldn't even consider camo for deer season here in PA. Way too many fools, drunks, and up-ere's around to take the chance. In fact, I will not even hunt the first and last day of rifle season here anymore.

When My Dad took me hunting the first time it was with my Grandfather and I. We went duck hunting on the Platte River North Platte NB. We pulled up to a stop on a bridge overlooking the river in my Grandfathers GMC truck. We sat there for what seemed like an eternity, it started to get daylight. Me NEVER have gone hunting before was thinking maybe we should at least!!! get out of the truck, and maybe get our shotguns with a round or two in them. But being patient was something that Grandpa said is a must when hunting, so I sat in the center of them and both were blaming me for the farts in the truck, when I took a look in the sky and it was BLACK with ducks (show's how long ago this was) I couldn't contain myself and said look lets get a couple of shots!!!! If nothing else, Grandpa again said what did I tell ya about being patient!!!! So there I sat wondering what were these guy's thinking about??? when the ducks got pretty close, from BOTH SIDES OF THE RIVER, (the Platte isn't a big river) men with face shields, goggles, safety glasses stood up and started shooting in ALL DIRECTIONS!!!!!!!!!! Both Grampa and Dad said THIS IS NOT DUCK HUNTING!!!!!!!!! We went to a lake that was located on my Grandpa's farm and did it the right way WITHOUT any safety equipment required other than what was prescribed by law, and I think the only reason for that was to show me the right way because WE WERE THE ONLY ONES AROUND FOR MILES!!!

I prefer not to see any other hunters, because I am allergic to lead, lol.

I have to tell ya Mr. Donnelly im still laughing about the above post,

I have to agree with you one this D4L, even before we get on trail to camp it starts. Guy's sound like they are reading from some catalogue advertisement about their latest, greatest game getter, AND THEY COULDNT SHOOT THEMSELVES LOOKING DOWN THE BARELL, The crew have learned to NOT LAUGH but sometimes its just to much to take, and a BS card has to be thrown on the table, usually by me because im not in camp to very often so they can be mad at me all they want.

Had one guy that was REALLY BAD ABOUT THE BEST OF EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!! we were sitting scoping threw bino's and scopes and I told him to QUIT MOVING, he said im not, and it don't matter because this is the NEW MATERIAL that makes no sound!!! we again looked for game, I told him again to QUIT MOVING DAMN IT!!!!! its not me im not moving and you couldn't hear me anyway!!! again to the scope's and I AGAIN SAID DAMN IT if you move again im going to throw you and your quiet clothes off the mountain!!!!! OH WAIT A SECOND ITS THE PRICE TAG YOU DIDNT REMOVE!!!!!

Except for the "coolness" factor, Im not sure why all these guys are wearing cammies. In washington you have to wear I forget how much, orange over your body. A lot of guys wear an orange vest. My wife bought me a nice warm orange coat maybe 20 years ago. Has a nice hood, and keeps me warm.

I went hunting with a guy years and years ago. He told me to dress warmly, and to bring my gun and nothing else. He would supply everything. Well, what he brought was the food. It turned out to be c-rats. No tent, no sleeping bags. At night we just sat down in front of a tree and hoped we survived the night. :D

BTW, I never went hunting with him again.

During the early hunt when the weather will allow I wear a pair or two of cam'os they have a tremendous amount of room in the right places and they are comfortable to boot. Later when it gets cold , Filson Mackinaw wool pants. Had them for YEARS and they look like new.

I went to Bass Pro at Myrtle Beach yesterday. All the camo and hunting stuff was made you know where. I asked the girl in the dept if there was anything made in the USA. She said I was in the wrong store. I did buy 3 boxes of . 556---had Federal's name on it made in Israel-- $10 a box. . Mark

Army Navy Surplus is the place for Camo, they have all the different kinds, also like the OLD style Field coats with button in liner, I have two of those. getting hard to find them

I don't like being seen... . If I'm hunting on public ground, mostly in NM, most other hunters never know I'm there. Neither do most of the animals. I make sure of it. Occasionally, you'll jump a buck or coyote when stalking, but I've never been spotted by other hunters, and I work my way around them or wait on them to thumb it up and leave. I don't wear any orange, either, but that's more for the deer... . that orange vest looks bright white to them. A big, barren spot moving through the trees... "What the heck is that?!?! I'm not gonna hang around to find out!!" I do carry come blaze orange flags and vests, though, in case you get caught out and need to be found, or if I shoot a buck I'll wrap the horns up with the orange for flags so I don't get shot or have to kill some idiot for shooting at me.....

I use either a guille suit I made from some old coveralls or just some light camo, depending on temps..... If it's too hot to move much, the deer won't be moving, either, un less you've already spooked them and they're leaving the area. How many times have I gotten clients on shots after other hunters have spooked deer out of a small valley or grove???! Talk about ticking off some guys!! But, they usually didn't stand a chance anyway, as they don't do their homework and find out where the animal's exits are, what direction they're going to travel, and how they'll react to being pushed.....

And I can't count the times I've just sat or laid there and let other hunters walk right by. Only once have I ever been seen, and that was by a guy who was hunting with his little girl... . prolly around 8 years old. She looked back and saw me smiling ear to ear!!! She just got a funny look on her face, then smiled and waved... Then I busted out laughing and scared the poor Dad to death... We sat and talked for awhile, and he likes to hunt, but didn't draw a tag, so he was just out hiking... with a rifle.

And I'm sure hunters glassing on the ridges will see me from time to time, but I'm a long ways from 'em... . Those fancy clothes must be hard to walk in, as they're very, very seldom very far off the main roads... .

I will admit, there are some of those new "quiet" fabrics that are very nice... . they'll keep your heat in when it's cold, but still breathe when you start to get hot... . That's nice!!!

I took stock of what I wore last week. My REI boots made by Raichle--$5 at the Goodwill Bargain Bin. My Propper BDU pants--$4 at Savers. Under Armor Duck Blind Camo shirt--$3 at Goodwill. Hat and jacket on sale at Cabela's. You can find some killer deals on hunting/outdoor gear at the thrift stores. I think when people give up hunting or perhaps when someone passes, some mighty fine gear shows up there. Oh, my rifle? A 1919 Carl Gustafson Swedish Mauser in 6. 5x55. Sporterized and shooting 140 grain Bergers this year. I do use the trailer and quad though. It's just too cold to stay in a tent and too far to walk to where I need to start to walk! Going out again this weekend.
