I am an ex subhunter (Aviation anti-submarine warfare operator). We don't just hunt subs, we can find surface vessels(and from a long ways away). I don't recall any terrorist organizations having access to any subs and if they did, they would be the very old and easily detectable types. Don M's friend will be protecting the fleet from incomming surface (komikaze terrorist) type attacks. The aircraft are capable of over the horizon targeting for the destroyers/cruisers via "Data Link. If he is in Helicopters (as I was) he is also a "wet" crewman. In other words a Rescue Swimmer. If one of our planes should be crippled during a mission, the pilot will try to fly back until he is "feet wet" at which time they will bail and the SAR Helo will come and the AW/SAR (aviation anti-submarine warfare operator/Search and Rescue) will be there. Our motto "So Others May Live". Our aircraft are also capable of carrying door guns, not just Torpedoes and sono-buoys. So we can offer a little support during a rescue in a hot zone. Of course, the boys that do the close-air support would be jealous so that work would go to them primarily. Don, I wish the best for your friend. He is looking forward to putting to use his extremely intense training I can assure you. I wish I were with him.
