Trouble with 6. 4 Powerstrokes

Found this long thread on the NuWa (HitchHiker) RV Owner's Forum.

Trouble with 6. 4 Powerstrokes

It's interesteing to read down through the posts. An objective consumer who pulls a heavy fifth wheel was considering a new Furd 6. 4 because he likes them and asked a few owner/drivers about them. In particular he asked a driver who drives one with a heavy construction body and heard very bad news.

Other posters who are at least somewhat objective recited reports they had heard in RV parks.

The Furd koolaid drinkers on the thread, one or two who have new ones with very few miles, explained their twisted logic for continuing to believe in their Furds in spite of mounting evidence that the 6. 4 engine is as sorry or sorrier than the sick. ohhh was or is.

It's long but funny to read.

I wouldn't buy one,but I hope Ford's new 6. 7 works out well for them. Competition amongst manufacturers forces them to improve their product. Ford directly and indirectly employs a lot of folks worldwide. I just don't see how a technician's nightmare and the V-8 configuration's gonna do it for them though. A roomy Ford cab with a Cummins engine would have been the way to go.

The 6. 4 is def a better engine than the 6. ohno. It is plagued though. Head gasket failures, Injectors, coolant leaks and the dreaded deck plate leaks. My buddy has a 6. ohno and hates the engine. It has been to the dealer 5 times for work. Injectors twice, computer, HPOP, and head gaskets. He is not chipped and the heaviest thing he has towed is his 5000lb boat. Maybe the 37" tires are the reason. :D

I hate to see Ford continue down the road of terrible Diesel engines. I really think they will fail with their in house 6. 7 also.

I don't think a Cummins engine is an option for two reasons. One being I believe that contractual agreements between Cummins and Chrysler/Dodge prevent Cummins from selling their ISB engines to competitors in the the light truck market and two, the Furd platform would require major redesign to install a heavy and longer high torque inline six cylinder configuration.

I have only heard good things about the 6. 4 first hand, I even drove one this last summer thinking about replacing my Chevy work truck. In the end though, my gut feeling is the reliability is a crap shoot with them. I hope the new engine does better for them, they seem so close right now.

i see you still have that ford envy harvey. intead of bashing someone else's truck, just go buy yourself one and be done with it. seems to me every 6. 4 owner on that nuwa site was happy, kinda like the 5 different 6. 4 owners i know. remind me to tell you the story about my contractor friend who got so po'ed at his 6. 7 , he bought a toyota. or my brother inlaw's 6. 7 that cant seem to stay out of the shop. or the guy that does my heavy welding repairs, he wants his old 98'12v back so bad it aint even funny. pay your money and take your chances, plain and simple!

I REALLY hope that the new 6. 7l Ford IS a durable and dependable engine. We are slated to get new service trucks sometime in 2010. We currently have Chevy's with the d-max. There isn't enough time to thoroughly express my displeasure with that engine platform or the local dealerships who service/repair them. I can HONESTLY say that the d/max has been neither durable nor reliable.

I work for a Cat dealership, so the idea of purchasing a Dodge or Sterling with a Cummins in it is out of the question. They are direct competition in the industrial engine market.

I have heard rumors that some of our fleet managers have been looking at Hinos'. I think they will be underpowered and expensive to repair. Personally, I think Ford builds a great work truck, too bad the last two engine platforms have been less than stellar.

Interesting read. Regardless of the manufacturer, I hope for quality, long lasting, efficient diesels. I am convinced that GM set the American diesel market back 20 years with the GM diesels of the early 80's. Those oldsmobile and buicks and suburbans turned a lot of folks off to smelly, noisey, unreliable diesels. -Vic

I find it humorous to watch how truthful reports of their experiences with Furd Navistar engine failures make some people really angry.

The truth hurts doesn't it?

I know a few people with a 6. 4 PowerJoke and all are having major problems with them. However, they are so die-hard that they wouldn't entertain the though of a Dodge. They do however, acknowledge that Cummins does make the best diesel engine.

you want humourous? how about takeing a 20+ year old high mileage gm diesel out to rescue a new dodge owner's fiver off the side of the highway cause his truck had to be towed. done that a few times. if it makes you feel better, had to do that for some fords and gm's also. you want sad? i find it sad when a person thinks they have to belittle someone else's vehicle or character to make themselves feel better. or how about the one's that make excuses when their favorite brand has issues, but when one of the others brands fail, it's just junk. what i really find humourous is the one's that begin to loose credibility on brand discussions when the facts are presented. boy how quick the tissues are pulled from the box when they are proven wrong. you know the one's that say, why are you talking about brand f when this is a brand d site. but the real kicker is when those are the same folks that actually start up the threads about those others brands. i really hope these kind of folks never have issues with their own trucks, a 12 step program might have to be developed for them.

I have said several times that I have never had a truck so powerful as the one I own right now..... 01'Dodge. But,I have had the MOST problems out of this one truck for the 3 yrs I have owned it than any other truck or car combined. This truck has been towed twice and pulled home once because it broke down only a few miles from home. One time I was pulling my trailer and that was when the VP just left me with no power... . it just died!! Had my dog... . dehydrated by the time the tow truck got me,I was starving and it was hot outside. Not to sound like a child but both times I was towed, the chosen wrecker was a Navistar with a powerstroke probably. I have owned a V10 Ford MH and all the remaining vehicles were from GM. The only reason I replaced my gasser 1/2 was because it simply did not have the guts to pull my trailer and only rendered 9mpg doing it. The Dodge gets much better but with a price to pay. And price to pay is big!! I personally don't care what any of you guys say about how good your Dodges are... . these forums all tell the story of all the weakness's these truck posess. And I have encountered every last one of them and more with my truck. Love the Cummins but if I had the time to install one into a 70' vintage Chevy pickup, that would be ideal.
