Just received this from Jacobs concerning EB controversy.

"Jim,

"There is huge amount of misinformation circulating around the internet. To

clear some things up: there have been no fires, there are no casting issues, and

there are no gasket design issues. What there has been is reports of loose

clamps at a dealership.

"A field location seemed to have difficulty aligning and installing the clamps

that hold the brake in place. As always, the issue was carefully investigated

and there were no issues identified beyond the customer having to make a return

trip to the shop due to a loose clamp connection. However, a redesign of the

brake was requested to make it fool-proof at installation so minor changes are

being made to make the brake self-aligning with the turbo and exhaust. The idea

is to have a product that anyone can install. These features are not required

for proper installation. However, the features do minimize the chance of sloppy

installations, which is the only reason for the change. If your brake is

installed and working properly, then you don't have an installation issue.

"Because this is an installation issue, there is no field action planned.

Because of the decision made to rework existing inventory, people have made the

situation to be a much bigger deal than it is. "

Maybe we wouldn't make such a big deal about it if they would have disclosed this information sooner. Duuuh :(

I sent a request to Jacobs weeks ago on this and never got any response.

Absolutly, I too did everything to find out the scoop. In fact Monday my dealer told me that there was a casting problem and I had the option to wait till the revised casting was available in December or I could have the EB removed for a full refund.

Yup. Badly handled communications.

They should have got out in front of this thing. It appears the info that Jim just got is yet another unofficial version.

Why don't dealers have the "official" story? Cummins sells and installs these too. Where is their "official" story?

I still find the whole thing very puzzeling and think it begs the question: If the answer really is that simple, why did it take so long to put out the word?

DC and Jacobs didn't just fall off the turnip truck. The whole thing still leaves lingering doubt with me.

I agree, why didn't they just post something on the Jacobs web site explaining the hold. They haven't been selling anything anyway. It's not like they're losing a lot of sales by letting the cat out of the bag. It sounds like they may do some machining on the brakes they have in stock, but for those of us who already have them, it sounds like nothing will be done. Mine's working fine. I'm not going to worry about it :D

jamar: In answer to your PM, I have no intention of removing mine. It took me the better part of a day and skinned knuckles (damn serpentine belt) putting it in, and I'm not about to remove it. If they came out with an improved mount, and would replace it under warranty, I'd do that, but I know they won't do that.

Sigh... . well there goes my class action lawsuit. . :( :-laf :-laf :-laf

Guess I'll just have to go back to being plumb happy with my ebrake.
