That's the word I was looking for, "boot". It was on the tip of my tounge! Wow, she drove off with it on the wheel? Ouch. At least if you locked your truck with a boot, the thief wouldn't get very far very fast and hopefully someone would hear it clanking around and call the cops!

How about a wheel lock like the traffic cops use to lock a wheel up so the owner can't get it? Sure it would be a pain, but dealing with insurance companies could be worse! I know, a heavy, bulky, tacky looking wheel lock. But if the cops use them, why not you? Of course, I bet they would be difficult to get one for personal use...

Boots are easy to find, do a search for them online. I have bought them before for locking up storage vehicles that were delinquent. They work well, but only if the person who is driving the car cares about the car they are in, not to mention is not suave enough to just remove the thing and leave it. They can be removed without the keys that unlock them.

This is just one of many links I found for them.

One word, Insurance...

If they want it they will get it. All the kill switches won't help when a wrecker picks up the back end of your truck and drives away 10 seconds later.

Just my 2 cents

Good point but I dont know anyone whos been happy with the settelment on a theft/loss claim. :( Lojack anyone?

I had the factory module intalled, it does make noise and responds to vibrations. When the dogs are in the truck I switch it to valet because they set off the alarm, but, no one will mess with the dogs anyway. I also have the RAVELCO, it unplugs, several circuits are disabled. I installed the JimmiJammers to deter the door handle break-in and also their theft device on the tailgate. I have a headache rack, so that protects the rear window from entry. I always set the emergency brake, turn the wheels, and back in wherever I can. Switching the 4x4 in will also deter a towing situation, or putting the xfer case in neutral will deter a drive off. Even window tint will slow them down because it holds the glass together some.

At the point where I am now with the few things I have done, insurance takes over from there if my truck is stolen, they at least can't say I did not make a real concerted effort to deter theft and all this stuff does get some nice discounts on my insurance. Here in NM truck thefts are high, but they have been deterred by the RAVELCO in many cases. All you can do is your best with what's available to you.

I use the best thing I have She's a shepard wolf mix can clear a 6 ft fence in one jump and unless your family you won't make it out of yard alive :)

and a 45 to back her up

I used to use the canine alarm, actually I still do but now he's so old they'll be miles down the road before he wakes up and he doesn't have enough teeth left to do much damage ;)

I pay insurance for a reason, besides if it looks like a rust bucket and does a good job of marking its territory why would they want to steal it. I mean really how many "Screamin' Jimmies" have you ever heard of being stolen? Half the time I don't even remember to lock the doors, and if somebody is being paid to steal it, you better clear it with the neighbors, one county and one city, who both know the drivers of the truck:-laf

A pair of German Shepherds and a Smith and Wesson. Also, get a Lojack in case the dogs are sleeping and the gun's not loaded.

I got rid of the POS aftermarket alarm the dealer had installed and changed over to the gray key like my 03 had. Beyond that its insured.

All kidding aside, I really do have a Lojack. They will put in an alarm, too, if you want. Can't remember exactly, but I think they will pay your insurance deductable if they can't recover your stolen vehicle within a certain amount of time. This isn't forever, though. Just a year or two. Hopefully I never have to find out if the device really works as well as they say.

Had a car with a busted ignition switch. Couldn't get a replacement, so I just installed a panel under the dash and used six toggle switches. Some single pole, 1
DPDT center off, a couple of DPST.

After that, I never locked the car. I have found the switches messed with, but the car still sitting there.

But, if they got a truck. It's gone anyway.

If you have enough switches in the truck I could see a thief throwing all of them to see what worked. You could wire one with a VERY loud siren and strobe lights on the truck. That would scare the bananas out of them for a moment. Then if it was in your driveway at the time you could take over the deterrent system with your firearm of choice. My personal favorite is a Colt 1991 commander . 45 ACP. Jason

If you are afraid of some one stealing it. Then go to a parts store and get a battery disconnect. In stall it next to the battery. that works verry good. IN AZ the dodge disel is the most stold truck.

Thanks for the info. This will help me to make my truck a little harder to take

FWIW, I talked to an El Paso, TX cop last night who told me that there wasn't any considerable amount of car thefts in town where the cars were being trailered or towed--still mostly break-ins/drive-aways from malls, etc. to Mexico...

For either or both of the 2 guys who recommended changing the locks, is that really necessary if you just simply begin keeping your dashboard VIN covered--doesn't recommending this assume the unlikely (?) scenario that the truck is already being cased?--or are you assuming that they are getting your VIN elsewhere?
