I'm just wondering what exactly normal diesel (i. e. black) smoke is. Is it uncombusted fuel? Is it just the residue from extra combusted fuel? I'm wondering because I'm trying to figure out how best to adjust my fuel plate and AFC star wheel. If I'm just blowing fuel out the tailpipe, I'll sacrifice a little power for better mileage. If it's fuel that is actually getting combusted I'll crank it up and let the smoke fly!

Hey Darel, crank it up man, just watch your EGT's. Since my mechanic slid my stock plate, my EGT's get up ALOT higher. I get 21 mpg, and everytime the transmission shifts into overdrive, it pours the smoke. Only bad thing about smoke is gettin it off the side of my bed and bumper, works good to get people off your a** though hehehe.

The black stuff is good.

The white stuff is bad.

If I'm not mistaken:

Black is fuel that is being burnt almost to its full potential.

White is fuel that is barely being burnt.

Black Smoke=soot=carbon=incompletely burned fuel

Diesel Fuel is made up of two elements... . Hydrogen and Carbon. The Hydrogen gets burned off first... and if there is too much fuel the Carbon will not get burned completely, and that causes soot.
