The first one literally broke in half. The second one is starting to do erating things like going past 190 and then dropping rapidly back to 160 or so. Does Cummins sell a differant unit for our trucks than the Dodge store????

YUP - got a name brand replacement from Kragen - did the roller-coaster temp bit - drove to nearest Cummins dealer, got the one THEY spec'd for the engine - problem GONE!

Problem SEEMS to be due to trapped air/vapor buildup on engine side of the T-stat that prevents to valve from opening as it should - Cummins T-stats have several larger "jiggle-pins" built into the valve that allow the vapors to pass even when coolent is too cool to open valve - THEN, when temps rise the T-stat control pellet is propery immersed in hot coolent, and responds promptly and correctly...

I just had one heck of a long night putting a new Cummins T-stat 190' in my ETH. The one that came out had the same part number as the newly revised unit and even after the instal, I still see some fluctuation arround 185-190's.

THE KICKER IS...

In torqueing the T-stat housing bolts to the Dodge manual's 24nm's 212in/lbs I SNAPPED A BOLT @ 10 PM LAST NIGHT!

LUCKILY CUMMINS SOUTHERN PLAINS IS OPEN TILL MIDNIGHT AND SO IS THEIR PARTS COUNTER.

I HAVE ZERO FAITH IN THAT TORQUE SPEC NOW!.

MAD MaX

I called Southern Plains Cummins and had them ship part # 3937171..... a 190 degree thermostat for a 2001 ETH. Ginuwine Cummins Parts. Hopefully this will solve my problem!

Barry you don't want the 190. . you want the 180!!!!!!

get better mileage. . . 5 - 1 mpg and more stable temps.

You got my check, right?

Mark

no leaks of my doin' cummins took care of that for me from the factory:(

I'm rounding them up though;) :p

Part Number

Mad Max:

You didn't happen to get a part number for that thermostat housing bolt did you? One of mine rounded off and I had to drill the top off of it to remove the housing.

This is probably a stupid question so feel free to make fun of me.

Blkdawg -

The bolts SP had were higher grade bolts from their hardware bins that they use for rebuilds. They did not have the Cummins bolts in stock and said they didn't use them in rebuilds because they were way over-priced for the quality.

I'm dealing w/ them in Houston, but they've got a place close to you. I'm sure they can help you out.

Drop me an e-mail if you're still having probz.

Good Luck and "HooK 'EM!"

I called and......

they said that the one here in Austin gets most of it's parts from SA or Houston. So I guess there's no part number, but do you have the bolt dimensions? This little bolt is becoming a PITA!

Blkdawg...

MAN I AM BAD! I 4got my e-mail address doesn't show; fortunately yours does.

"You've got mail"

Sorry about the delay Boss.
