Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Thermostat question

The OEM thermostat stuck open after 255K miles. I replaced it with a Stant brand and asked for the gasket too. The gasket is a Federal Mogul part number 35639 but it didn't fit in the housing or the block. The T-stat has the rubber around the circumference and doesn't leak, but what of the gasket? It looks like a doughnut with a shoulder. Where does it go and is this the wrong one?

There is a lot of confusion with the seals for the 12 valves.I would go to either a cummins or dodge dealer who will know enough to use the production date to get you the correct parts

That looks similar to the gasket for my B150's in the boat. It fits in into releaf in the block or outlet piece, can not remember which. It has been a few years. I will be replacing the stat in my 24V this week. Snoking

I did the thermostat this evening. I used a Gates stat from Geno's. The 24V just uses the rubber doughnut on the stat to seal the outlet elbow to the block. Sure runs quieter at 190 degree's than it does at 160 or lower. I can see a big flake of rust in the old stat that I removed which is not letting it close all the way. Had the same thing happen to both the B150's in the boat a couple years ago, first one and then shortly after the other engine did the same thing.

I put a paper towel in the block and cleaned the seat with a chisel. On the outlet elbow I cleaner that up with a pad sander. I filled the block with gallon and a half of anti-freeze and some water before putting in the new thermostat. Put the rest of the 3 gals in the rad and topped it off with water.

Hardest part is the stupid drain that is half block by the inter-cooler outlet. Hopefully good from a few more years on the anti-freeze and another ten on the stat.
