Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Thermostate Difference ???

I ordered a new thermostate and it showed up, but it is different. Anyone ever see one like this. Left is the new, right is the old.

The one on the left looks just like the one in my 97.

the left one is like the unit they just sold me that had my temp gauge doing a impression of a windshield wiper, i drilled a couple small holes so coolant would circulate better around the element and not shock it, that stopped the swinging gauge

Hmmm, wonder if they are just trying to clear parts I ordered the new one and had them send it to me rather than drive over and pick it up in person. We will see what they say in the morning.

I see the box on the right is dated 02 and the box on the left is dated 05. I heard they updated the thermostat a while ago. I also think I recall the price went from something like $18. 00 to $40. 00. My 98 had one like on the right, but it was replaced 2 times in 100K miles because it would start to not open all the way (causing it to run hot while towing). No idea what's in the 02.

Yep the price when from $18 last time I bought to $56 this time. I just got off the phone with them and they said that I got the correct part and that it supecedes the older part.

Looks like they must have went away from the one with the rubber sleeve and now have gone back to it. The only thing I don't like about the sleeve is it will get sucked or pushed it to the thermostat and hold it open and it's really hard to get more then 140 degrees engine temp on a warm day.

with the two rubber bits i think i paid under $30 for that piece of crap, i would of been seriously annoyed if i had not read about the flapping temp gauge before i did the work

One on the right I bought probably 3 years ago to stop the temp fluctuations which it never did. And I went to 190 or 185 dgree not sure which now without going to look in my file folder. I hope the newer version will be better than the older. Only time will tell!!
