Went to a Chevron/Texaco seminar last night on the new 2007 regulations and how it affects the oils & coolants. The old green antifreeze will not stand up the the heat that EGR is adding to the engine. Better be using extended life only as this has the ability to dispute heat much quicker. They also had photos of some wear on the rocker arm adjusters where they set in the push tube. This was caused by oil that was unable to suspend soot. Cj-4 is supposed to address the soot , heat ect. of the new EGR engines. He also said that ULSD is all that is being produced, so off road is ULSD. There may be some small quantities of 500 ppm left, but not for long. The EPA fine for not running ULSD is $34,000. 00 per truck per day !! Here in NY I've been told DOT is already dipping tanks @ truck inspections. If you have bulk fuel on site , he suggested getting something in writing from your supplier stating it is 15 ppm fuel. Especially if it is a winter blend.

I suspected that once ULSD hit the pumps the end would be near for 500 ppm fuel. Why would the refiners want to produce two different products? Any comment at the seminar about whether home heating oil will end up being low sulphur?

This is only partially true fyi. For the most part, yes - ULSD is all that is being produced for on road diesel in most places as this point... however, HSD-high sulfur diesel is still being produced for offroad use - 5000ppm for those that need it. I have the spec sheets from bp on both.
