My parents burn coal and wood as their primary source of heat and you are right coal has been tougher to get a whole lot more expensive. They went from paying $20 a ton to $50 in one year. I hate to see the cost of it next year  :(

How many tons do they typically use in the winter months? Or, say, how long does a ton last?

They use about 2 tons of coal and about six cords of seasoned pine. That lasts about 7. 5 to 8 months. Coal is used primarily at night since it typically lasts till the next morning. Oh, and by the ways it's usually 80+ degrees in the house at all times during the winter  I think they're the only onese that sleep with the windows open :-laf

My stove is a coal/wood model.

I looked into coal this year, it was well over $200. 00 a ton (delivered)

I could get 2. 5 cords of wood for that much.
