I've been enjoying driving CTDs with manual transmissions since 2001, but have recently had temporary medical issues with my left foot and now a broken right elbow. Truck is sitting in the garage waiting for my arm to heal. Got me thinking about ordering a 2008 6. 7L with the 68RE. If I do it, I plan to get a SWB 3500 2WD in order to get the highest payload w/o getting a dually. My 2004. 5 will be paid off in 7 months. I figure the trade will cost me about $20k if I did it now, but less the longer I wait. Of course, by the time I actually took delivery of the new truck, I'd be able to drive the one I have.

Am I nutz?

Is the risk with the 6. 7L regen issues worth it to get the 68RE?

Anyone want a very nice 04. 5 4WD NV5600 with 40k on it?

I got a friend who might be interested. He's looking for the identical truck in your sig except a 2500 but he might not really care. The only thing is he was going to wait till fall to buy. What do you want for it if I may ask?

I wouldnt worry about the 6. 7 too much; Id buy one if a) I had the money and b) I didnt want to go racing with it. The issues Ive heard of all seem to be fairly minor, and Id bet that most have been taken care of or soon will be.

The ash colecter on the exaust filled up and did not burn like it was suposed to have you heard of this iam still wating to hear from dealer to see why this hapened and how to prevent it in the feture.

They should have all the bug's worked out by the time the 08's come out atleast thats what I am counting on I will be placeing my order for my truck really quick 08 LB 2500 with everything but leather encludeing the power steps for the short people in my life :)

Been toying with the same thoughts lately... but after seeing my rig in the new TDR issue that arrived today (page 120) and it doesn't do anything stupid on this OKC turn I'm leaving on here in 5 hours, I might just have to keep it a bit longer!;)

No way! Finally just got my 2000 running the way i like it. Runs great. Can burn anything in it used motor oil. gear oil, dang near anything i dump in the aux tank and circulate around through a frantz filter then transfer it to the main tank by turning a valve. It doesnt miss a beat, has more power than I can actually use (in fact have turned it back down lately), have put way too many hours testing, customizing and optimizing it the way I like. And its paid for. . Dont need a bigger motor this one will pull anything and get good mileage doing it. Sorry, just giving my thoughts to people contemplating spending all that money for a new one. . Not me, and besides I dont care how DC (formerly now) skirts their warranty issues. Just last month while talking to a service mgr he blamed the 6. 7 issues on CUSTOMERS using bad fuel! Im in calif and there is only about 2 kinds available, ulsd & bio... "I have been my OWN warranty station on mine. " But now i know it, and can fix it. . No "blanking" dpf or regen cycle or having the truck telling me when to change my oil. Gosh im only 43 but getting old fashioned REAL fast. Still LOVE my old toilet paper roll bypass filter that lets me change the oil when I want. Maybe say in 20k miles, or more... Then ill burn it as fuel. And I dont mind having roll-up-windows. Wanted it that way. Simple as possible baby.

Yes you are nutz. You'll have no payments in a few months. Why would you want to start payments all over again in the $500/600/700 range?

Drive the 2004 till it falls apart ... and tuck away $$$ each month for the new 2014 you'll get next.

Ken, first of all, speedy recovery on the left foot and broken right elbow. I don't believe a SWB is the best alternative and I think you may regret getting a 2WD the first time you get the truck out on loose sand in our desert Southwest environment. Besides, the resale value and demand for 4WD is so much greater.

Personally, I'd leave the 04. 5 in the garage till you heal and then get out and get the most you can out of it. It's just now broken in.

My opinion is this

Get the 6. 7 with a few bugs that are being worked out and a great auto transmission or

Keep your 5. 9 but the 5. 9 trucks with auto transmissions have only fair transmissions in them. I had two knee surgeries and prefer the auto 10 years later. if I am stuck in traffic with a manual vehicle I am hurting for days.

I chose the 6. 7 and have no regrets

add a few $ to get that extended warranty, resist the urge for "performance" mods, and you'll be fine.

The torque of the new motor, 6 speed auto, quiet operation, reduced smell and exhaust brake are awesome!

Ken,

Speedy recovery too you first. I am in the same quandary as you are. My '04. 5 will be paid off in 14 months. As much as I like it, I am still thinking about getting an '08. Every time I do I think "why?" since I can't think of any good reason other than getting the automatic and the fact it's a NEW truck.

Soon to be no more payments, cheaper insurance and registration costs, only 53K miles as of today, 21mpg on the freeway (I drove from home to Vegas last month and it took a little less than 1/2 tank). The money I save on payments can go towards goodies for my truck/wife/daughter. I just can't logically justify it other than I want it.

Good luck on your decision.

I was on a road bike this time. Cast is off and some use of my arm now.

Don't show the xray like someone did for you on the NuWa Forum... Don't want to make anyone else sick... Get healed soon, Ken, and I'd stay with your current truck. Especially if your thinking of a SRW new model. It won't be enough for your new HitchHiker... :-laf

Actually, the 2WD SWB has about 3400 lbs of useful load, so it should be able to handle pin weights up to about 2500 lbs or so. I would not go that high, but the GVWR is there. I realize that GVWR does not make up for the capacity of a DRW, but still pretty respectable.
