I searched a couple posts didnt find anything thing that would help. I was thinking of getting a cap for my truck but I cant see spending over 2k for a cap that ill only use sometimes. So i was thinking of one of the soft toppers that folds up and comes right off. Just wondering if anyone has one and pros n cons. Thats alot easier to stomach then for the cap. Looking forward to hearing some opinions .

I see your point on the money. but I have also seen cheap prices on hard shells during this economy on craigslist some that are pretty cheap. the canvas style ones depends on probley your main use. I have seen them on a couple trucks. dont know if they fade or how bad. also how well they will still seal over time. like most canvas they can stretch or shrink pending the weather. I like the fact that some of the styles you can roll up the sides. it really would be to me a fair weather top. again dont know how much of a hassle it would be for someone to uninstall or reinstall. also the water repelent on it? I have never seen a truck here on tdr with one. in the end I would choose a hard shell maybe with lift windows on the side and such. just because its easier to handle off and on. but I know a new price of some can be up there. I probley didnt help much. maybe do a open google search on them and you may find others that have posted pro's and con's on them.

I'm thinking along the same lines. I don't want a fiberglass top. I'm interested in the Can-Back style canvas tops. However, they are about a $1,000 bucks... . so, after the first of the year, I think I am going to try to make my own.

There's lots of good reading at Expedition Portal.

Here's the Can-Back.

I have a few thoughts on the topic if you are interested. If you buy one of these canvass ones they are still $$$$. So I was going and may make my own. I was going to build wooden sides out of nice wood that would fit into the post holes in the bed sides. I was going to a sail make to get canvass and have them put brass grommets in for me so I can secure it to the sides. You could also cut in a rear window like a 1960's convertible. When not needed or you want to put it away I would make a roll up like a window shade at the rear top of the cab. If you are really good with tools you could take a router and make a track down the top sides and put some type of screw in brass or stainless ornaments to hold it into each track. If you want canvas side too then make a frame and lace the top to the bottom. Well good luck

I have a softopper canopy. It is great and they are great people to work with. It was $700 delivered to my door and the shipping weight was 48lbs! I don't like the way mine fits on my 3rd gen, in the back where the rear flap comes down, but I think they are going to update their pattern and get me a new canvas that fits a little better. Overall it is a great product and functions well. It is a marine canvas and they send some seem sealer to seal the inside seems where it is sewn.

I was looking at soft topper. its 6 something . and i can take it off and on as i want.

I've got a "Rugged Cover" foldable, it fastens with 4 handle-type clamps, have had it for a couple of years now, love it! It cost around $300, well worth it in my opinion. Search "rugged cover" and you'll find their web site, which has good photos of the cover. Very easy to remove, which I do whenever I pull my gooseneck trailer. The other nice feature is when you fold it up twice (the cover frame is hinged in two places), you can use the built-in tie downs to keep it folded up and load large items in the bed that wouldn't fit under the cover.

I had a cap on my truck for years and took it off, I got sick of cralling in and out and never could put any thing in to high. I went with the Extang Trifecta fold up Very easy on and off. They run about four to five hundred dollers, fit and seal very well.
