My wife is beating me up over the CTDrattling in the morning. I live in suburbia with neighbors that have SIERRA club stickers on their Honda hybrids.

I am on call and the beast is LOUD and has to awaken every household along my mile drive to the main road. When cold it is noisier but the neighbors have the windows closed. It is spring and the wife reams me out daily !!!!!!!!!!! Driveway is under our bedroom. .

So here is my plan. . Oil pan blanket then mayber the valve cover blanket from ATP. I could use some honest input from anyone that installed these. Will they make a difference or should I just RTV a bunch of lead to the oilpan?

Thanks in advance

I know just the man you need to talk to, Greg (LSfarm),his truck is real quiet, to quiet if you ask me, sounds like a Duraheap. :p but anyway, he's got more sound proofing on that engine than I care to mention. I'm sure when he see this thread, he'll be quick to respond.

Operation Quiet Cummins

jringler, do a search on this site for 'noise reduction' there are three or four threads with lots of information. There was a 'product evaluation' article done on the ATP products.

The ATP wrap products are real quality, but pretty pricey. If you like to do your own work on your truck I'd recommend you try some sound reduction on your own. If money is not an issue for you, I'm sure you will be happy with the ATP products.

If you email me with your email address, I will send you some photos and a bit of the history of my quest for a quieter Cummins truck.

Just to give you some examples, a stock truck measures around 92-94 dB at the front wheelwells, and infront of the radiator. My truck is about 84 dB using same sound scale ['C' scale], and conditions. This is a significant drop in sound.

I can talk to a pedestrian through my rolled down window without yelling. But it still sounds like a Cummins, not a powerstroke or duramax [Rob!]. RamThis1 just likes loud noise :D

Send me an email, and I'll send some more information.

It has been a few months since you enquired, but I just installed the ATP oil pan blanket this evening. Easy install, I do recommend safety wire pliers (instead of vice grips), and long sleave shirt and cotton gloves if they are handy(no I wore a t-shirt. . the blanket is fiberglass)

Initial drive through the neigborhood seemed like a significant drop in clattering echo from houses as I pass by. I'm satisfied!

I would tell your wife to stop complaining or go here and trade it in.

If your neighbors complain about your truck, you could get a Harley or even a loud dirt bike and drive that to work. Or get your kids a couple dirt bikes and let them ride them up and down the road all day.

I would not put up with complaints from neighbors or wives about my truck.

ATP Wrap

jringler,

Last year, I drove to the ATP Factory and had them install the valve cover, exhaust mainfold, turbo/down pipe and oil pan blankets. I didn't purchase the hood blanket, since my truck already had a OEM blanket.

While driving back home, both my friend, who went with me, and I noticed the engine noise, in the cab, was noticeably less "sharp". Although the noise reduction is noticeable, I wouldn't go so far as to say it cut it in half :) After returning home, another friend, who also has a CTD, drove mine and was so impressed, he drove to So. California and had his truck done.

Now, you can stand next to the front wheel wells, with the engine idling, and carry on a conversation, without yelling at each other :) The reduction of "in-cab" noise is even more noticeable, however, the truck still doesn't sound like a D-Max :)

They are "spendie" however I have no regrets and would do it again.

Good Luck, with whatever you decide,

Frank

ATP suggestion

Confucious say "... sometimes thread go in unknown directions- diesel drivers must therefore keep sense of humor and jump on straight line... ... " I couldn't resist but as for a testimonial I find that a two inch wrap below the nose quiets the wife down nicely- I highly recommend it!!!

ATP Wrap...

I have the complete "covering. " Valve cover, exhaust manifold, turbo, hood liner, exhaust pipe, and oil pan. I also had cover's made for my exhaust brake, Espar Diesel heater exhaust pipe, and Espar muffler. It does quiet "some" of the noise. More importantly it keeps the engine compartment "cooler. " It does take longer to cool down after a hard run.

I would do it again. :D

See their website here.

But I think you're gonna ruin your engine with all the wrap stuff. If you don't let all that noise get out somehow, it's gonna build up and somethin's gonna blow:D :D Oo.

Plus, nothing beats irritating the crap out of your neighbors. Who needs 'em? Where were they when you needed help with (fill in task here)? And what right do they have to be sleeping when you're going out to earn a living? Maybe they're out of work bums and need to be woken up to go look for a job! ;)

HAHA I had a real rough 3 weeks at work and reading through this mess lifted my spirits.

Yea, where were those neighbors when I needed help putting out the grass fire from the explosives my kids lit off in the dry neighbors yard?

LSFarm AKA Greg has been sending me info and we talked on the phone for a while so I am ready to order some stuff tomorrow if work is slow. Hope it is slow.
