hey everyone. this one's pretty plain and simple. im heavily considering an 06 4x4 6 speed and was wondering if there were any common engine/transmission problems that you 06 & 07 5. 9 guys are experiencing. i also figured this post could help anyone who might be having problems but havent asked questions yet. i would appreciate any feedback or advice!

My o6 quad cab automatic has 25,000 miles with zero problems with the exception of replacing a sensor that kept setting a code. My 98 was a five speed but when I found that the only stick available was a six speed that was geared too low for good mileage, I went with the automatic. It was a good choice: I get up to 22 mpg depending on speed and wind conditions.

I've had my 06 since January 07 only 14k on it now. Bought it as a left over. No major problems. The driver seat back split at the seam that was replaced under warranty. I have a strange rattle from below the glove box when going into a gear or the auto shifting. It does not like HESS diesel. Other than that the truck is great. Mileage could always be better, but these are not my old 12V. Went with the auto for the same reason. Drive between PA and FL a couple times a year. Had a 3. 42 been available with a 6 speed when I got this one I probably would have gone that way. I like rowing gears for some reason and I prefer manuals for sled pulling... . wait there isn't any sled pulling in Florida that I have found.

My 06 is really a great truck. I do complain about little things but over all its a good truck.

Stay away from the electric transfercase if you can as mine is doing some strange stuff now at 9k miles.

I have a 07 that I got in feb it just under 11k on it now been a good truck so far I have a 6 speed man in it it gets right around 18. 5 I did get 20mpg out of it once but was only doing 55 for 350 miles no fun. I hate autos in my book JUNK for farming and pulling big loads around the ranch it's just a pain never in the right gear.

I had a 94ctd it was a pos 15 sets of front pads. 4 trannys the rear axle would leak every other week and when you turn the ac on smoke would come up between the steering wheel. But this new truck making me thing about buying a nother one this truck my wife drives to work every day.

I'm still driveing my 97 ford but It still out runs her truck so far.

Details on the strange stuff will be appreciated. I don't use 4x4 too often but will be good to know what to look for. I will be buying an extended warranty, in any event. I'm at 25k miles, so far so good (knock on wood).

The reasons I bought the truck (Body styling, frame, CTD, and huge interior) are constants. I can live with, alter, or fix anything else that might arise.

mine has been a good truck, mileage so far sucks, the smarty has helped by at least 10% or so, which will easily pay for itself. IMO buying a truck that is a year old may not be the best money decison, all the diesels I see out for sale that are used and that new are priced the same or more than what I pay for my truck new or what you could be a brand new one for, check with dave smith, I bought my truck for $1500 below invoice, invoice is the sticker price with 10. 5% taken off it, add in the incentives, you could get into a loaded 4x4 Quad cab brand new for 32-33k depending on options, keep this in mind when buying the '06

There are two simple things that could cause that.

1. Make sure your jack is tight. Located under the front passenger seat, it sounds like it's coming from the dash.

2. The transmission dipstick could be rattling against the metal heater line right next to it. Ty-wrap the two together to stop that.

Just a thought.

I have had no issues. I love the truck and enjoy driving it everyday. Personally i think the 06 and 07 5. 9's will be very popular trucks to own from here out.

I've got 15,000 miles and have had to replace 2 injectors so far... ..... it's not the engines issue in my opinion as it has 940 hours and that equals a hell of a lot of idle time. It was built in St Louis and I've had lots of little leaks on everything except the engine, poor fitment of body panels, poor quality paint problems like excessive orange peel and uneven outer paint coating. The rear end has had bearings at the wheels and seals replaced... ... ... ... ... The transmission is awesome, I don't care what anybody says! I've got a manual 5-speed 12 valve and I wish I had time and money to put a 48re behind it. These newer automatics just work well for me and plowing snow. Back to the St louis thing, my advice would be to purchase a truck that was built in Saltillo Mexico as the last half dozen trucks that I have owned have been from there and the fit and finish and reliability were second to none. I had never had anything other than recalls performed on my Dodges until I got this truck. I do like the fuel mileage after the white smoke at start up flash that was performed, 21. 6 highway and 15 in town. Before it was 18 highway and around 13 in town.

Thanks PawPaw. I will check into both of those. I hadn't actually looking into it yet. It doesn't bother me enough. I use it as a work truck as it is, but I am still trying to keep it nice.

Ditto on what Cummins Cowboy said on buyin a year old truck. When I bought this one I looked at a number of years of interest including 24v trucks, but when it came down to it there was only a thousand or so difference between one and two year old trucks and the new one. I went out the door at 33k on a QC SLT short bed 4x4 auto thunder road (which doesn't mean much to me).

I think the 06-07 5. 9 Trucks are going to be fairly sought after. My truck has been pretty much flawless for 34,500 miles. Only little things like have to get the computer update to make my trailer hookup work correctly, and the AC vent door was stuck, but other than that, it is a 20MPG truck. I can say that without lying or crossing my fingers, it is a great truck and pulls my 40ft toy hauler with no troubles. I really don't need the XZillaraider, but it is nice to play with. Overall, I am very happy I chose to get an 06 5. 9 instead of waiting to getting a later model. Good luck with whatever you get. Scotty

Well I love my megacab had a 97 clubcab 12v great truck that is why I bought another cummins had a exaust manifold crack at 35k then at 100k now just replaced at 161k manifold had to be cut off because it shrunk and gasket was leaking (DC has a new up dated manifold if you are still under warrenty) dont think I will have the problem again Now that I`ve been RIPPED truck ran good before thing flat Screams now,OK back to the Question Jakebreak pump replaced at 60k,brakes at 130k,trans at 161k(Didnt have anything to do with the Smarty,Injectors or TURBO :-laf),oh yea a cam sensor, and a injector line around 100k All and All love my truck Goll is 400k 97 went 389k and still running strong My 2cents hard to beat Randy

Well I have just over 11 k on my '07 5. 9l QC 4X4, Auto Trans. So far no mechanical problems at all. Mine also was made in St. Louis and with that said have had nothing but body problems. They just had to order a 2nd replacement rear sliding window, because the guy the put the last one screwed up the seals.
Grill has had to be replaced, drivers side rear window stopped working ( wire came lose) Hood, Rear Door on driver side, Rear door on passengers side have all had to be realigned. Empty getting around 18 -19 MPG general driving. Loaded it drops to 15- 16 MPG. Love the auto trans. and it has worked flawlessly in the fields. As mentioned above try and get one made in Mexico and not St. Louis. Great Truck and my old '96 was just as good and still running and towing, even tho its no longer mine. (sold it locally)

I have a 2006 Mega 3500 Dually 4x4 CTD 48RE and love it! The only problem I've had thus far has been a software issue which was fixed. My truck was one of the very first built so I was a test bed for software . All is well now! OH YEAH,,,there has been one issue I cant seem to get resolved: Sharty customer service at the dealerships and I'm not the complaining type but how my truck was fixed was opinions being passed along at this site (TDR rocks, great resource) I've heard Chevy and Ford are worse. Just like my Harley, the dealerships are putting the dagger to the companies! Great truck though!!!

I love my '06 QC. Got a couple of CEL's, had to do with an ambient temp sensor. Dealer fixed. I have 32,000 on it in a little over a year, Some towing, alot of highway miles. Currently running some Bio 5-10%, no problems, runs great. It is a 2wd, exactly as I wanted (wife thinks I love the truck more than her:rolleyes:):-laf

added injection pulse soley for emissions eats mileage when driving and idling.
