Here I am

Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) thinking about future turbo upgrades, ball bearing maybe

my truck doesn't really get worked all that hard other then a healthy flogging but a occasional trailered load like a car or two isn't out of the question, i was thinking about if i am going to save up for a s300 why not spring a few more hundred for a ball bearing, what say the experienced? is the garret GT37R better then a edge jammer bb? is the extra $400 for the garret turbo kit worth it? (lotsa hoses and adapters but otherwise the garret and edge are about the same $) do ball bearing turbos suck on our trucks? do they really spool up as fast as you'd think they should? is it a significant problem that the garrets are listed for a 24 valve?

I don't see turbos listed on Edge's site. The Jammer spooled well as I understand it but had a small compressor that wasn't suited for much more than the low 400hp range. Also if I remember right it wasn't wastegated.

the only thing about the Garretts is that they don't rate them for very high boost... I think 40psi is about all they recomend.

that's not very much on a 12v, but if that'll be enough for your combo, they are nice turbos and you'll get a broader powerband/better spool up/etc.

i was digging around with a general web search and fount the jammer for 1400 but i can't remember who had it, i don't really want more then low 400s, i have a marine head gasket and studs but no rings (couldn't find anyone in the area to cut em when i had the head off) 400-425 sounds like a non parts breaking level and became my long term goal a while back but i have a couple project cars to do before the truck, (getting the blower installed on my bmw's fresh stroker motor is a big one :D)

other future planned bombs are south bend clutch, ddp stage two or three sticks (leaning towards the twos) and a real plate maybe a #10, distant win the lottery bomb would be a cam

I made ~600 with the jammer bb (turbonetics stage 1). turbonetics still sells it. EGT's were well within range too. It was an excellent turbo, towing and daily driving, and I beat on it BAD and never broke it.

I just sold it recently (parting the 12V)... .

The edge turbos can be found on ebay every once in a while. Usually cheap too.

Two edge bb turbos ended on friday. A second gen one for $1027, and a 3rd gen one for $510

I remember you saying how great it was in the PMs we exchanged several months ago . . . drove pretty stock-like at low boost but breathed well when pushed, right?

Here is what I had already posted on the Garrett GT37R Stage 3 which I used to have(I just sold it and delivered it on my way to the recent Schied's event). I will again echo that its a great option for the under 500hp crowd if you can handle the cost but you will need to either machine out the elbow as I discuss to free up the restriction or have a HX40 flange made. If you have any other questions I will be glad to help... ... ..... Andy

good info thanks, i am leaning towards the garrett for the cool factor but it'll likely be a while before i get to it with my many projects, however with diesel getting close to sane prices i may move the truck up on the list
