Hi, I was thinking about putting the BD twinturbo setup on my 12valve (97) and was wondering what else needs to be installed. This is my first CTD, and has the bone stock engine and trans (5 speed). I know I will need a clutch, but what else do I need to add to the engine besides the twin kit? Thanks.

CMARTIN- There are tons of articles in these forums about hot-rodding the 12 valve. Conside stabilizing your dowel pin, and looking at a fully splined main shaft for your transmission (fifth gear fix). Your clutch will be begging for mercy at over ~350hp. Most guys goose up the fuel before adding air, all based on EGT, so twins might be considered a little further down bomb run. :) Gauges should be high on the list of things to do before the bombing starts.

Well, my intentions are to bomb from the get go. I would like to add what is needed all at once, not little by little. I have been doing some reading mostly on this site, but I juts have not seen much info about twins. I basically need to know what fuel injectors would be correct, what size exhaust, what plate number etc. Or do I just bolt on the twins and go. I would like to make 500hp, so long as I can do it without getting into taking the engine apart. I do not mind adding parts, but I do not want to get into adding o-rings, etc. If I can esily add it (i. e. the studs that are installed without removing the head) then I am all for it. Now, if I can NOT make 500hp without goin all out on the actual engine, then what CAN I make and with WHAT parts.

I can sit here for weeks reading posts, but that just confuses me with not knowing which parts work best with each other. Everyone seems to have different setups and I am just a bit confused on what is best to make MASSIVE power with minimal internal mods. Like I said, I do not mind maybe doing exhaust springs, or changing injector pumps, injectors, etc. Thats why i was thinking just go twins... . so far from what I have read, it seems to be the best power adder "bang for buck", I just don't know what ELSE to put on with the twins.

Anything over about 35 psi of boost is going to push the stock head gasket, even tho there are some around that have/are holding more than that. With twins you can easily make 50 psi so new studs and o-rining the head would help and keep you from going back in and putting a new headgasket in after you blow the stock one.

#10 plate, 3k or 4k gov. spring kit, 370 injectors, Laser cut delivery vavles, BHAF, and better exhaust system.

If you want 500 hp you are going to have alot to do. Gauges, exhaust, clutch and whatever they do to an NV4500. There's $2k. Now you are ready to start. Pump work and injectors will run from $1k to $3k depending on whose ya use. Twins will run from $3k to $6k depending on what combo you use and how much extra machine shop time it takes to make the parts fit. You might consider letting one place supply all the pump, injector and turbo stuff so that they can use past experience to create what you want. DD claims they can do 500hp easier and cheaper than twins. You can talk to them. If you still want twins and a complete system call PDR, or JR Adkins, or Enterprise Engines or whoever and let them figure it out for you. That way if it doesn't work you have less phone calls to make.

Very helpful answer, thanks a bunch. I will contact DD... . but who are they:D

I dont HAVE to go twins, just figured it was the easiest way to get close to 500hp. I dont want to spend WAY too much money, but am willing to spend a good chunk if neccessary.

DD= Diesel Dynamics I believe.

I personally can attest to DD having more than 500hp in a truck without twins. I'm pretty sure you have to have a new cam installed though.

Their website also has an "engine buildup" calculator where you install the model and and horsepower and it tells you what they think you need to install on the truck to achieve it. Pretty cool and seems consistent.

well Piers is going to tell him not to run these twins. I think for the money and wanting around 500 Hp that BD's twins will better suit you. Over 500 hp, than Piers's setup is the way to go. Now, one thing to consider, if you have a late 97 vs. an early 97 it make a big difference in installation. Easy way to check is to see if your 120 volt water heater in in the front freeze plug or is it threading in a raise boss on your block in front on the freeze plug. If it is threaded, then its a late block and you have two drains for the turbos, and instalation is much easier. Go with a Southbend Dual disk clucth, easy to install, holds the power, get some 370's, run a power adjuster or a big plate, 4K gov springs, and the twins. You can run 50 psi easy. That little part about blowing your head gasket at 35 is crazy. If you are running 30 degrees timing, then that may happen, but at 16. 5 to 17 degrees timing, you can run 50 psi boost easy and not worry about the head. Good luck and have fun.

A HX-35 at 35 psi should have about 52 psi worth of drive pressure, a proper set of Twins (PDR in this case) the drive pressure should be at 1 to 1 or better, so at 50 psi the drive pressure will be 50 psi or less, can't comment on the BD setup as no one tells anything. Drive pressure will kill a head gasket too, just like too much boost or too much timing!
