Hi folks. I currently have a 92 W250 and am thinking about getting a 98 to get a nicer cab but still keep the mechanical engine. Can anyone comment on the difference between the two engines (I know the injection pumps are different); or provide any other feedback on this idea.

Thanks

Clint

head isn't different... early, non-intercooled engines had larger diamteter injectors... only difference from his 92 and the later 12v is the notch ground in the head to clear the overflow valve.

as for the 1st gen vs. 2nd gen...

I've owned both... I owned a 91. 5 (intercooled) and then I've owned a 97 and three 98 quad cabs...

as far as I'm concerned the only thing the 1st gen trucks have going for them is the 4wd and underhood room... (I'm currently shopping for a 1st gen 4x4 btw)

a 98 12v will KILL a 1st gen powerwise... they have better transmissions, nicer interior, more legroom, etc.

and the P7100 rocks the snot out of a VE44

Like Forrest says the '98 has a better 5-speed transmission. Once the 5th-gear issue is addressed it can handle a lot more power than the Getrag.

I know very little about VE tuning but with the P7100 series there are a variety of cam plates available giving you more than a couple choices for fueling profiles.

One thing the ol VE has over the P-pump is dynamic timing, something discussed in another thread, but in real world driving this probably has minimal impact on MPG.

I agree with Forrest. I have the truck you want but I'm not letting go of it. I just finished a new radiator and Mr. Bob's hoses this weekend. Next will be the head studs to keep the head in place with ALL the rest of the up grades start pushin'. If I could change anything it'd be two things. First a power seat on the passenger side (to keep the wife quiet :) ) and second would be 3. 73 gears. 3. 54 isn't enough and 4. 10s are too much. Oh yea and better brakes. Good luck in your search. It'll be worth the upgrade from you nice 1st gen to the 98 12 valve.

I noticed you are from Canada, my truck is also from Canada and hence "NO" egr. How sweet no egr in Kalifornia, headed to Oregon next year.
