This has me stumped, for the third time in a month the check engine light has come on and the dealer is scratching his head. But I have noticed a pattern but the dealer says it is a considence.

Driving down the road everything is normal, pull over and put the truck in neutral, leave it running and take a cell call. Put the truck in drive and check engine light comes on. This has happened three times, I had the code cleared the first two times and the dealer says it is showing a transmission fault but could not find anything wrong said it could be a some engine computer that cost $800 to replace.

Just seems weird that it has happened the same way every time.

Any suggestions before I spend $800?

You need to make sure you have the latest reflash. Have the dealer run your VIN for the latest ECM update. It will cost you a hundred bucks but it beats 800. 00.

So far I've done two.

I did not get the codes, but they did update my ECM codes and charged me $100. Said the TIPM(spelling?) could be going and it cost $800 to replace.

But why would me driving and then putting in in neutral and after 5 minutes putting in in drive trigger the check engine light?

Check your copy of the work order if you paid for it and see if the codes that existed were documented.

If some of it was under warranty and you were not given a copy, call them and have them pull the records.

Those codes that your truck had stored should have been written down and put on the repair order somewhere.

Pretty much standard procedure at any decent repair facility. :)

I hate to ask the question but why did you put vehicle in neutral for extended time instead of park

I put mine in neutral all the time also... Its my understanding that the 48 RE does NOT circulate fluid in park gear. . it does in Neutral.

My convertor drains down if I allow the truck to sit for a day or two, so I fire it up and shift to neutral for a couplke of seconds before trying to drive away.

To the OP, I read somewhere that the 06 models are having some ECU issues and that there is a completely different "warranty" for them. .

Met a guy over at the local Flyin J from Florida that delivered boats. He had a Bunch of miles on his auto trans Cummins. He credited cooling off the trans in neutral as a major contributor to his trans' long life!

A couple of times last summer my Banks Power PDA flagged some transmission slip warnings shifting in and out of neutral while in heavy traffic on I-95. We were in the midst of one of those 100+ degree heat waves. I bump the transmission in and out of neutral when I'm sitting in heavy traffic on really hot days to keep the engine, transmission, and me cooler. I never got a CEL though and I'm quite certain that the reason the Banks flagged the slip warnings was because I was still moving (very slow) when I'd shift. Apparently it didn't like that. :)

Good Habit... ...

This should always be done when idling for extended periods. It's also a must do when ambient temps are high as it will circ oil through the valve body and cooler... .

I checked with my techs and they confirmed this, You know just replaced my transmission, I also enquired if this should throw a cel and they said not that they are aware of get me the codes and I will run it by my techs
