Ram/Cummins Quiz: Seven Questions

The truck featured on the TDR calendar for the month of September belongs to TDR member Jacob Musgrove from Carrollton, Georgia. Jacob’s truck is a serious work truck and proves its worth mile after mile. We asked Jacob for more information about himself and his truck and we think you’ll enjoy his answers!

Turbo Diesel Register: Where was the photo taken?
Jacob Musgrove: I took the photo near Watford City, North Dakota, on an Indian reservation working on 20 miles of 12” and 8” crude oil pipelines earlier this year. So, 40 miles altogether. That was the coldest climate my rig and I have ever worked in thus far. Below negative degree weather is horrible, and she wasn’t happy being in it, and neither was I.

TDR: What are the details of the truck and what modifications have you done?
JM: The truck is a 2006 Ram 3500 DRW 4X4 with a current odometer reading of 191,400 miles.
Typical highway fuel economy has been 16.9 MPG, depending on where I am working. I have been able to get into the ’20s before. My truck weighs about 17,000 pounds alone.

Modifications:
I have an AirDog2 lift pump along with an AFE cold air intake. I had EFI live custom tuning, but I took that off. I now have an older H&S Mini Max that I love. I have Firestone Red Label airbags, along with an onboard air compressor. I have a 4” turbo-back exhaust with a 6” tip. The truck has a 5% tint on all four windows. I installed a 2.5” leveling kit with 2” hub-centric wheel spacers, and she has six 35x12.50R17 Nitto Trail Grappler tires. I recently installed a new one-piece driveshaft that I am enjoying. The truck has a dual-disc South Bend clutch that is holding up well; it has roughly 100,000 miles on it. I have installed new Bilstein heavy-duty shocks and a rough country dual steering stabilizer. I have also installed a new touchscreen radio with Sirius XM for long trips across the country. I love my CB radio as well.

TDR: What is the most unusual thing you’ve ever trailered with it?
JM: I’ve trailered a directional drilling rig with it.

TDR: What is the heaviest thing you’ve ever trailered with it?
JM: The heaviest thing I have hauled with her is a 40x20 drilling rig for my dad. Pulling the truck did not miss a beat. However, trying to stop the massive drill was difficult. The drill weighs 20,000-pounds alone I believe, not including a truck or trailer. My rig is almost 17,000-pounds. The trailer is about 8,500-pounds, so altogether about 45,000-pounds. Thankfully I didn’t have to go very far. I didn’t go fast because I didn’t want to hurt my truck anymore or burn my brakes up. But honestly, she did just fine.

TDR: Have you ever entered the TDR calendar contest before?
JM: No, this is the first time for me! I am new to the TDR world! However, I’ve owned a Cummins since 2014, when I was 20 years old. I still have my first Cummins.

TDR: How many Turbo Diesel Ram trucks do you own?
JM: I own two Cummins right now. I have my 2006 Ram, 3500 DRW, 24-valve, six-speed. I also have my first Cummins, which is a 2003 Ram 2500 4X4, which is a 24-valve, five-speed with 215,000 miles on the odometer.

TDR: Do you or does your family have a name for your truck?
JM: Yes, we call my welding rig “Cooter Bug”.

TDR: Is there any other information you’d like to share about the truck?
JM: My 2006 ram 3500 has been a great truck to me. It is everything I want and need. She is old but has never let me down. We have been all over the country together. I try my best to take care of her, and that is working in my favor so far. She’s just getting broke in, but I plan to keep her until she absolutely cannot go anymore, and then she will be my stay-at-home farm rig. She is not the slickest looking truck but has made me a lot of money for what the pipeliners call a “Farm Rig”. I think she fits me, though. She’s simple and not flashy like me. But she will blow your doors off when you mash the gas pedal even with all the weight. She has beat a lot of newer Rams, DuraMaxes, and PowerStrokes, no lie. (Jacob, we definitely don’t doubt that!)

Congratulations Jacob!
