Funny for you

digital camera question

That is cool.

There was a video that was e-mailed to me a while ago where all you could see was what looked like the view from a full size airplane that was headed toward the ground. It looks like it is going to crash when all of a sudden a hand reaches out and catches the plane.

I'd like to see that!

To PC-12 Driver

Both the PC-12 and TBM 700 fascinate me. Kindly tell me what your thoughts are on each one as they compare to the other. I know the numbers but I have no personal experience with either. The most sophisticated plane I have much time in is a T-210. Thanks in advance Steve.

Yeah yeah posting pics of the planes you fly. I don't think the 172s I fly could hold up to the flash of the camera. I did, however, get to sit right seat in a 2005 Gulfstream 550 this afternoon, and play with the PFD and HUD :) It was awesome!

I will get pics up!

Sitting in the pilot's seat, they're both very similar operation-wise. They even share a bunch of the same avionics and autopilot, so that all works the same. But the TBM handles like a little sports car and the Pilatus flys like a Suburban. A really heavy Suburban. Without power steering. The first time I hand flew it at 180+kts I thought the autopilot roll servo hadn't disconnected. It isn't bad below 150kts or so. This is something they've fixed on the latest revision (something like 60% less roll control force).

As far as usefullness, the PC12 kicks the TBM's butt. I can load up 8 people with bags and still carry 4 hours of fuel. And I don't have to crawl over everyone to get up front (although a pilot's door is optional on the TBM at the cost of some payload). Or there's been a couple of times that I've pulled the back two seats out and took a trade show booth and four salesmen to a show. It's just a really big airplane for its size (not sure if that makes sense) that can carry whatever you can fit in it a long ways.

But the new TBMs are really getting fast. We hit about 260kts and they've got another 60kts on that (320kt top speed at altitude). They're really nice for 1 or 2 people or a small family to get somewhere quickly, but they just don't have the big shoulders or comfort level of the '12.

But most importantly, the PC12 has a lavitory and the TBM doesn't.

Out of all the flying I have done, including taildraggers, and aerobatic included, the absolute most fun I have had in aviation has got to be floatplane flying. Cumminspilot, I want one of those. My dream plane is a 185 on floats. And be right in your neighborhood with it.

Another 60 grand and I'll have the floats & the upgraded engine/prop. My plane is actually a C-175 converted to conventional gear & a Horton STOL kit. I call it a Skywagon when I talk to ATC because if I call it a Skylark once they see me they ask me again what I am. "I'm a converted 175, 14M" (I got tired of this phrase).

While I don't have my float rating yet I do love flying floats. My dream is to fly in the southeast of AK in Beavers & Otters on floats for a living for a few summers. A 185 is a hell of a performing machine. Especially one with a TIO540 out of a Navajo. 350HP!!!!
