Thos of you running propane injection: I have questions for you

Howdy all, I have thought of a few questions for those of you who have, or had propane injection. I'm just keeping this in mind for possible future BOMBing myself.

* Do/did you keep the propane "on" all the time, or use it just for the ocassional hot rodding?
* What kind of propane mileage do/did you get: meaning about how many miles does a gallon of propane last?
* What does/did propane do for your overall fuel mileage?
* About how many HP increase does propane seem to give?
* I believe propane lowers EGT's??
* Are there any conditions when you should NOT use propane: cold engine not yet warmed up, towing heavy going up steep hills, ???

for the Edge propane system

* Use it most of the time except when towing or out on the highway.

* 50 to 100 miles per gal of propane depending on whether you run liquid or vapor, and if running vapor, how warm the tank is. Also varies depending on what trubo boost you set the propane to come in at.

* Mostly a 2 to 4 mile per gallon diesel fuel milage increase, but can go as high as 8 if used on the highway and set to enter at low turbo boost.

* Can give over 100 horse power but has the potential to destroy your engine. Keep increases down to under 80 or 90 hosre power to keep things safe.

* Lowers egts around 100 degrees.

* Don't use it in any condition where the grid heaters will turn on.

The Edge system uses standard off the shelf, time proven, fork lift components. It is the BEST system on the market. You can build a clone yourself for a couple hundred bucks, not including the tank.

I run the AST liquid system and the large orfice(1/4").
*I leave the system on all the time,there is a hobbs switch on the intake that opens the propane solinoid at about 5psi.

*According to AST the Disel to propane is about 4 to 1 or four gallons of disel to one gallon of propane. This also depends on how much load is on the engine.

*My truck(35004x4ETH/DEE)produced 274hp with a VAcpc,275's and JRE 4" exhaust and 294hp with propane!

*Propane definately lowers the EGT's especially when towing, without propane 1350/1400+deg. with 1200/1300 deg. at 65/70 mph uphill 19400# total weight. You will also notice that the engine will run quiter and smother.

*It would be wise not to allow the boost to open the propane while engine is cold and grid heaters are on. As far as using while towing heavy loads don't let the RPMs drop to low.

For the BullyDog Vapor System:

* I activate the propane for both power & Mileage gains. If I am taking a short ride around town, I leave it off.

* I got 700 miles out of a 20 Lb BBQ tank during the summer. I had the regulator set to the "max" w/no detonation.


* It's tough for me to figure out actual milage (36" tires). I have not done it in a while. My fuel gauge did stay full longer when running the system.

* With the Bullydog system set to the Max/Race mode, a guess of maybe 70HP+. Thats just a guess.

* Propane lowers EGT. I don't tow, so I never really get high EGT's. It won't increase EGT at all.

* You should wait until the truck is at operating temperature during cold weather. There are 3 safety features built into the Bullydog system so the propane won't flow when the grid heater is cycling at idle or low boost cruising. Common sence says not to arm the system when the grid heater is cycling . #ad

I built my own propane system. Here is my response to your questions.

* Do/did you keep the propane "on" all the time, or use it just for the ocassional hot rodding?

I didn't like it on all the time. I had an adjustable pressure switch. I found that I can run 8-10 psi of boost just running down the freeway (80 mph) or slightly accelerating or with head winds. I ended up setting my activation point at 16 psi. At this setting it was mainly for hotrodding.


* What kind of propane mileage do/did you get: meaning about how many miles does a gallon of propane last?

My BBQ size tank only lasted 200-300 miles. I'm a fairly aggressive driver so she was spraying quite frequently. #ad


* What does/did propane do for your overall fuel mileage?

I log every tank of fuel I buy in a log book. I saw NO increase in fuel mileage.

* About how many HP increase does propane seem to give?

Mine was set to about 60 hp or so. This system was either on or off. If I adjusted the pressure any higher, it would detonate at LOW rpms when I reached 16 psi.

I have since built a propane system for a powerstroke 5-spd that is proportional to boost pressure. He gets zero detonation during low rpms. The turbo response on a stroke is much different than on our dodges so the comparison isn't fair. I would definately look for a proportional system. Not just an ON and OFF system.

I found propane to increase EGT's during WOT. With more power comes more heat. BUT, at equivalent loads, the combination of diesel and propane is lower than diesel alone.

I have since removed the propane altogether. I have enough power for now with just straight diesel fuel. (i. e. 46 psi boost) I can't go much higher until I get an HX-40.

I have the Bully Dog system. Using two 20lb BBQ tanks.

I use it primarily for towing. When I was in San Diego for a month, I adjusted the switch so it'd kick in about 8# of boost. Loved slamming the go fast pedal, then pulling myself outta the back seat! #ad


I saw no mpg gain. 'Course my right foot is made of lead. #ad


When I'd kick it in while towing, I'd get a substantial power boost with minimal EGT increase. Saw lots of surprised faces of PSD owners, in my rear view mirrors!! #ad
