How did the dealer confirm the bad injector? Did the solenoid fail or was it a cracked tip? I've got this knocking that sounds like loose valves (overhead adjusted at 58,000, no change) or pre ignition sometimes, and others it sounds like someone is tapping on the block with a ball peen... I've got about 63,000 miles on the truck and have only had Edge EZ and then Juice for about 15,000 miles. I had the Juice off for a couple of weeks while in Ogden for the Hot program and it didn't seem "low" on power. Doesn't smoke except for a very haze at WOT (stock). Oil analysis looks good. Am I paranoid or do I have a problem? Will a FASS or other fuel system help? If this engine is just a little more noisy because of age, that's fine. In the end I want to know the symptoms that tipped you off that something was wrong. Thanks

OK... so I found this old post... . My injectors are making a lot of noise. I didn't realize this, but have be told by multiple reople now... . Do I need to replace the whole injectors or can I just replace the tips??

Sometimes noise from your injectors can be helped by adding a couple of quarts of trans fluid into your fuel but other that that nozzles tend to cure it. And as for how a dealer is suppose to tell if you have a bad injector or injectors there are a few tests. Some things they look for is, what is the maxium pressure you can make on the rail, will the throttle stick high and step down, is there excessive black smoke, hard to start when hot or cold. Then go on to do a fuel return test to see how much fuel is coming around the injectors. One great way to eliminate injectors is to cap off each line at the rail one at a time and see if the problem goes away. I'm sure alot of tech's will agree though that the number one cause of injector problem is fuel contamination from water and running a poor quality filter. If it's not a Mopar of Fleetguard don't use it, I highly stress that. The best thing to do for them though is to use an Air Dog setup. I deal with a lot of injector problem and i average replacing 8 sets a month. Most of them are on trucks around the 70k-90k mileage range. You'd be suprised how far people will drive to have someone look at there truck that actually knows what they are doing.

I've always used trans fluid in mine and anyone that comes into either shop uses it. Normally on a regular basis, every fill up. It lubes extremely well and boost the cetane rating. For tanks with known contaminated fuel we use 2 qts trans fluid 1qt Marvel Mystery oil. Works wonders on the intermitant misses caused by bad fuel. I've seen 50/50 mix of off road fuel and used filtered trans fluid in the tanks of trucks pulling and on the road, burns nice.

 whoa, thats a ton of bad injectors. Are you talking all Dodge's? At that rate I would think someone would be interested to know why you are doing so many.

What percentage of those have boxes?

Both times when mine acted up, it was the electronics in them that took a dump. 2 the first time around, so we replaced those 2 with different bodies, and 6 tips. Then shortly there after, 2 more went south... not the 2 that were replaced. I then went with a set of 6 low mile bodies and 6 new tips again.

Most of the injectors replaced are due to water contamination in the fuel and yes they are all dodges. Every once and awhile there is one with a box on it. I don't always put a full set in a truck but i do put atleast 3 in. If one is bad between cyl # 1&3 all 3 get replaced, the same with the last 3 cylinders. I have found that only replacing one at a time will cause you to be tearing it down again, it's only a matter of time before another one goes. I also work at 2 different places, on one side it's all warranty work, the other it's trucks out of warranty and people wanting to save $$$ So i see ALOT of trucks and alot of problems. All those injectors replaced and only like 3 CP3s in the past 6 months, strange and all those trucks have been 150k plus.

yeah, it's a major problem and that most people aren't properly servicing their fuel filters and using cheap ones doesn't help. Changed one the other day that had 42k on the truck and the owner said it had never been changed before. Truck was setting a rail pressure code.

How can I tell if I have any bad injectors?

What is the most common problems?

Speak english now, I don't know anything about injectors yet. :-laf

We don't run any kind of added power on our trucks... but we saw a whole bunch of trucks at the dealer when we took delivery (08 5500) that they (dealer) were trying to claim was bad fuel...

We built and installed a 10 micron primary filter, with a 2 micron secondary filter... each one holds about a qt to a qt and a half of fuel... the primary filter has a water trap and drain... . we did this 16-18 months ago when we put the 08 in service, it now has something over 70K miles... plus all the other trucks... we've not changed any of these filters since installation nor have we changed the factory filter...

We do drain the primary filter every 3 or 4 months and have never gotten more than a teaspoon of water out of any one truck...

Before winter sets in... we will change all of these just for the fun of it... . but it our edge against bad fuel and problems on the road... . the huge filter size (capacity) has given me a warm fuzzy feeling... one truck with over 100K on this set up tested the same fuel pressure after a 100k as it did when the filters were new. . so I guess that they still flow well... .

Hope this helps. .
