For you guys who have done this before, what type of sealant did you use on your NPT fittings?

I don't want to use Teflon tape in the fuel system. What type of thread sealant is compatible with diesel fuel? Obviously I don't want to use regular "plumber's pipe dope. "

Please advise.

Take it from over 40 years of diesel experience, Teflon tape will eventually leak when used with diesel. Even worse is the nearly impossible to clean up scraps of tape left behind if you ever have to take something apart. Best thread seal for diesel is Permatex #2 or anti-seize.

I didn't think it was compatible with diesel fuel. Remember, your fuel pressure gauge is post-filter. Anything that comes loose goes through your injector pump and is forced through (or gets stuck in) your injectors.

I took illflem's advice and used #2 Permatex. Thanks illflem.

I tried that but no luck. I was afraid to tighten my fittings any more for fear I'd gall the threads up.

I used just enough to fill the threads about half-way up and wiped off the excess.

Oh well, since my mechanical fuel pressure gauge is sittin' on my dash... ... . I guess I'll know real quick when I have a problem/leak. :D

Use of teflon tape on fuel injection components IS NOT recommended by fuel inj. equipment manufactures. Many components are cast aluminum, such as the filter assy. on 99 MY. The tape on the pipe threads, which are tapered, provides a slick surface between the fitting and housing and the plug acts a wedge, and with a very little torque you can split the housing. They will void warrenty if this happens. Also the tape on most metal fittings is not effective. It was developed for sealing cyrogenic (extreem cold) applications such as liquid oxygen & nitrogen.

Tape or not to tape that is the?

No tape . use anti-seize or #2 permatex . The tape would be pushed out of the line as the fuel is pumped not sucked in . Ron in LOUIVILLE KY:-{} :D

While that is true, consider that the first fitting is in immediate proximity to the fuel filter housing. If any bits of tape get left floating in your fuel, eventually they will get into the flowstream of fuel that's headed for the VP44 and your injectors. Why chance it?

Wish this thread was around about a month ago. When I installed mine I went right by the article in issue 36 and used the teflon tape. Now it shouldn't be used?? Oh well, I'm not about to change it now, I'll just keep watch for leaks.
