I was driving pulling my trailer and all of a sudden my check guages light flashed on and off. It's been happening the past two days on/off like there's a bad connection. I checked around the engine area and don't visually see anything. I check my codes and p0516 came up which says Battery Temperature Sensor Low. What does this mean and where should I check?
 
Your battery temp sensor is under one of the batteries - check for wires going to the bottom of one of the battery trays. I think it's just a two wire sensor, so should be fairly easy to check connections. Keep an eye on the voltage gauge, but even without the sensor it's probably fine. Hope you find the problem.
 
You want to fix this (if it's a real problem), because I believe the ECM will prevent the alternator from charging the battery if it's below a certain temp. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong on that.



It might be a bogus code. I got that code once before too... seems to be a "bug" in the system.

Mine had this code from day one, but by about 3000 miles it had cleared itself. I never had the MIL illuminate, though.

I'm not that familiar with the 3rd gens, but I know in the 2nd gens the batteries were just wired in parallel. That is, either they're both charging or they both aren't... there's no isolation between them. Know DC's desire to save money, I would assume the same is true on the 3rd gens. I always planned to add an isolator to my '99 but never got around to it...

The 3rd gens are wired in parallel-no isolator...
