Hello all, I have a question on my 97 12valve. On the rear of the injection pump where the throttle linkage attaches there is a flat plate that the ball and socket attaches to. My question is this, there are several holes in the attachment plate, are certain ones used for certain applications? i found this attachment point when trying to determine why the accelerator pedal is difficult to push. It also seems that I run out of pedal before the injection pump is anywhere near its' end of travel. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

There are supposed to be two screws to fasten the throttle linkage lever to the pump lever. If one of them is missing that could cause your problem. This picture shows the back of the injection pump. You can see one of the screws. It's marked H.

Ok, the linkage on my injection pump does not look like that. I will try to get a picture and post it, maybe someone can give me an idea. The lower arm where the return spring attaches (F in the picture) actually has two springs and they connect with a plastic clip, not a spring with hooks on the end. I also wonder if the linkage is the reason I have been having problems with the tv cable for the trans.

That spring is really a double wound spring. There are two hooks on each end that are side by side. The ends of the spring do have a plastic cover on them. It does not show up well in the picture. If you look close you can see that the hook end is quite a bit larger than the wires in the spring. That larger hook is actually the plastic cover. The normal failure is for one of the hooks to rust and/or wear so one of the hooks breaks. The result is that the spring is a lot weaker. There is also a spring on the transmission TV lever that can sometimes be AWOL. If that happens kick down does not work properly and shifting can be messed up. In order for the TV cable to work properly the throttle springs and the TV lever spring have to be right. One symptom of something being wrong is that the fuel pedal seems to be really easy to push. Don't ask me how I know that.

Joe, I will get a picture of the one on the truck and post it. It is similar to the picture that you posted. I could not access the link that Shadrach posted. The tv return spring is installed, the injection pump actually has two different return springs in two parallel locations.

I see my trying to attach a picture from Cummins Quickserve ( electronic parts catalogue ) doesn't work. Oh well I tried. Shadrach

Gbrinlee - I know what you mean regarding the springs. On at least some of our 12V they ARE separate paired springs - one on each side (opposed) of the flat linkage arms. They tie in using snap lock plastic 'hoods' that mate to 'T' studs rather than ball studs. BUT they simply take the hook end of the spring through their body anyway!!. This is confusing enough local dealer told me they have different part numbers and are different sizes. The local Cummins parts dist. showed me they are not only the same but (Ahem) supplied as pairs!!!

FWIW If you need to change the bracket or any of the mains parts there is a kit from Cummins to up grade to the 97 style. The p/n for the manual trans version is 4089112. Of course it does cost a few bucks. I never bothered to figure out the auto version. Shadrach
